RALEIGH, NC ... Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that Kristin Somers has been chosen as a recipient of the company's 2006 Stover Volunteerism Award for Community Service. The annual award recognizes Eaton employees who have demonstrated leadership or exemplary service in community activities and have served as volunteers in health and human care, educational, arts, cultural or civic organizations. The award is named in honor of James R. Stover, former Chairman of the Board of Eaton Corporation.
Each year, nominated Eaton employees are evaluated by a corporate selection committee representing Eaton's business units and corporate staff functions. Honored employees receive a commemorative award and a $2,500 contribution from Eaton to a non-profit community organization of their choice.
Somers, one of five people to receive this award in 2006, is a marketing communications manager for Eaton's Power Quality Solutions Operations (PQSO) business in Raleigh and has been an Eaton employee for 3 years. Her volunteer work includes involvement with the Leukemia Society Rock-and-Roll Marathon, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church capital campaign to build a new church and preschool, and the Lutheran Family Services efforts to resettle families who are fleeing persecution in their home countries. Over the past few years Somers resettled an extended family of 25 Burmese refugees into the Research Triangle Park area and helped them find housing, learn English, deal with the U.S. healthcare system and obtain jobs.
"The Stover Volunteerism Award recognizes those members of the Eaton team who epitomize the Eaton vision of being the most admired company in our markets by supporting their community," said Barry Dogget, Eaton's vice president, Public and Community Affairs. "This year's recipients clearly demonstrate a vital commitment to their neighbors and their neighborhoods. Their leadership in service to those in need should serve as an example to all of us."
Somers will donate her $2,500 award to the Susan G. Komen 3-day Breast Cancer Walk to be held in Philadelphia in October, an organization in which she recently became involved. Thousands of women and men will unite in cities across the country and walk 60 miles over the course of three days. Net proceeds from the event will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to fund breast cancer research and community outreach.
