Next Generation Eaton Supercharger Powers Toyota TRD Aurion

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. … Drawing on its motor sports heritage, Toyota Australia recently unveiled a new performance brand and all-new vehicle, the TRD Aurion for the local market. The TRD Aurion will also contain the world’s first production application of diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation’s Roots-type supercharger design called the Twin Vortices Series (TVS).

The TVS supercharged TRD Aurion is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that creates 320 horsepower. Harrop Engineering, a certified Eaton distributor, developed the complete supercharger package for the vehicle. The TRD Aurion is slated to go on sale in Australia later this year.

“It’s totally ironic that the first application of the TVS appears on the world’s first TRD production vehicle but we really think it’s fitting,” said Jeff Romig, vice president and general manager of Eaton’s supercharger business. “This vehicle is really focused on providing refined performance and an athletic driving experience and we think the instantaneous torque and boost from the TVS helps provide those dynamics.”

Eaton unveiled the TVS supercharger design at the 2006 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) tradeshow. The patented TVS design features four-lobe rotors and high-flow inlet and outlet ports that greatly enhance thermal efficiency, enabling greater volumetric capacity at higher revolutions per minute (RPM). Previous Eaton Roots-type designs featured only three-lobe rotor assemblies. The new TVS supercharger design is scalable and adaptable to virtually all engine designs.

Eaton is the world’s largest manufacturer of original equipment superchargers. The first application of an Eaton roots-type supercharger debuted on the 1989 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe. Since, Eaton superchargers have appeared on the Buick Park Avenue UltraTM, Buick RegalTM, Pontiac Grand PrixTM, Ford Mustang Cobra SVTTM, Ford Lightening SVTTM, MINI Cooper STM, Jaguar XKRTM, Range Rover SportTM, Cadillac STS-VTM, Cadillac XLR-VTM, Chevrolet Cobalt SSTM, Saturn Ion RedlineTM and the Mustang Shelby GT500TM.

Eaton Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturer with 2006 sales of $12.4 billion. Eaton is a global leader in electrical systems and components for power quality distribution and control; fluid power systems and services for industrial, mobile and aircraft equipment; intelligent truck drivetrain systems for safety and fuel economy; and automotive engine air management systems, powertrain solutions and specialty controls for performance, fuel economy and safety.
