Eaton Announces New F-Frame Circuit Breaker With Electronic Trip Unit

PITTSBURGH … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announces the newest addition to the Cutler-Hammer Series C Molded Case Circuit Breaker line: the FDE Electronic Circuit Breaker. The FDE consists of a three-pole F-frame breaker with an electronic trip unit. Previously, the F-frame breaker offering was limited to thermal magnetic trip units.

The new electronics use the Digitrip 310+ technology and also feature:

Long, short, instantaneous and ground fault protection

Adjustable long time pickup, eliminating the need for a separate rating plug

Enhanced coordination

Local current and cause of trip display (optional)

The available short circuit current ratings at 480 Vac are: 35 kAIC (FDE), 65 kAIC (HFDE) and 100 kAIC (FDCE). All internal and external accessories for the current F-frame breaker are compatible with the FDE since the footprint is the same. These breakers are now available in Eaton’s panelboards and switchboards.

The FDE offers a reduction in total installed cost and size, since most electronic trip units are offered in larger frames. The long time pickup range is 15 to 225 amps, with available ground fault protection. The NEC requires ground fault protection for service entrance and feeder circuits in healthcare facilities. Installing ground fault protection beyond those circuits can prevent damage to transformers and motor insulation in any circuit. Besides protecting equipment, isolating ground faults quickly before they intensify also reduces hazardous arc flash energy.
