SOUTHFIELD, Mich.… Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation joined with Volkswagen to develop the combination supercharger and turbocharger system on the unique 1.4-liter TSI direct-injection gasoline engine. This engine recently was named the “Best Engine of the Year” for the second consecutive year at the annual Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany.

With the Eaton system, the TSI engines deliver the power of a larger engine with the efficiency and emissions of a much smaller engine. The result: greater fuel economy and performance at substantially reduced costs.

Named the “Twincharger” by Volkswagen, the system combines an Eaton Roots-style supercharger and a single-stage turbocharger to boost the compact four-cylinder engine’s output to 168 horsepower with an average fuel economy of 39 miles per gallon (m.p.g.). The 1.4-liter TSI engine is available on the Volkswagen Golf GT^TM in Europe with a new model expected to launch later this year.

Engine Technology International magazine organizes the International Engine of the Year Award to highlight under-hood engineering excellence. They engage 62 renowned journalists from 30 countries in the evaluation of the engines for fuel economy, smoothness, performance, noise and drivability.

The 1.4-liter TSI finished more than 200 points ahead of the second-place winner in the 1.0- to 1.4-liter engine category. The engine was also recently named by Automotive News as one of the top “100 Cool Things” to come out of the automotive industry recently.
