Eaton Supercharger Gives Added Boost to 2009 Volkswagen Golf

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that its fifth generation supercharger will once again be used to power the award-winning 1.4-liter TSI direct-injection engine available in the new 2009 Volkswagen Golf.

Eaton partnered with Volkswagen to develop the “twincharger” system that has twice been named as Best Engine of the Year at the annual Engine Expo. The system combines a half-size Eaton fifth generation, three lobe Roots-type positive supercharger and a single-stage turbocharger to deliver the power of a larger engine with the efficiency and emissions of a much smaller engine. The system boosts the four-cylinder engine’s output to 160 horsepower (118 kW) and 177 lb-feet of torque at an impressive fuel consumption average of 39.2 mpg.

“The supercharger and turbocharger system has proven, once again, to be an outstanding technology to increase vehicle power and improve fuel economy – an attribute VW Golf drivers have come to appreciate,” said Joao Faria, president of Eaton’s Powertrain and Specialty Controls Business.

The VW Golf will launch in Europe in October and in the United States in the fall of 2009. For the European launch, the new Golf offers a choice of four direct-injection gasoline engines, one is equipped with the “twincharger” system.
