Eaton Enhances Safety Of Electrical Power Distribution Systems With Arc Resistant Low Voltage Switchgear

PITTSBURGH … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it will offer arc resistant low voltage switchgear as part of the enhanced safety platform for its low voltage electrical power distribution systems. This innovative equipment can channel arc flash energy produced inside the switchgear away from operating personnel, thereby improving maintenance safety.

Key features of Eaton’s arc resistant low voltage switchgear include a patented ventilation system to handle internal arcing faults originating in bus, cable or breaker cell compartments and a design that redirects dangerous energy and gases through the top of equipment and away from operators, electricians and maintenance professionals.

It also helps customers improve safety and sustainability in their operations.”

Arc flash blasts can produce temperatures as high as 35,000˚F, or almost four times the surface temperature of the sun, causing most materials to vaporize. The blasts can also spray molten droplets of copper, steel and other pieces of shrapnel at dangerously high speeds.

Eaton’s Arc Resistant Low Voltage Switchgear is rated as Type 2 defined by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) C37.20.7, which means the equipment is designed to protect the operator around the equipment perimeter. The switchgear is also available with a National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA) Type 2B rating option. That additional feature is intended to protect the operator even if the low voltage instrument compartment door is open.

The product meets all normal standards for low voltage switchgear, as well as ANSI criteria for testing required to certify arc-resistant design. Its numerous design ratings include:

• Up to 85kA at 508VAC maximum

• Up to 65kA at 635VAC maximum

• Up to NEMA Type 2B (ANSI C37.20.7)

• Up to 5,000A breaker continuous current

• Up to 10,000A main bus continuous current
