SHANGHAI… Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announced that it has been honored by China Enterprise News for its achievements in improving environmental, health and safety (EHS) performance worldwide.

Eaton’s innovative program -- Global Management System of Environment, Safety, Security and Health (MESH) --won the award of “2008 Excellent Cases of Multinational Corporations Fulfilling Social Responsibility” together with other 20 multinationals, such as BASF, ABB and 3M.

“We’re honored that Eaton’s sustainability practices are being recognized in China again,” said Joe-Tao Zhou, president of China, Eaton Corporation. “Throughout our company, Eaton people are developing solutions that drive sustainable growth. And we are committed to being a global leader in protecting the environment, our people and our communities everywhere we operate.” 

The awards were announced at the “2009 Multinational Corporations Social Responsibility Seminar”, which featured experts and scholars from National Development and Reform Commission, Development Research Center under State Council, Research Institute of Ministry of Commerce, China Enterprise Confederation, China Consumer Association and representatives from multinationals.  The “2008 Excellent Cases of Multinational Corporations Fulfilling Social Responsibility” program was launched in April last year, with more than 200 multinationals participating in the first round pitching. Through extensive research and discussion by experts, media and related institutions, 21 cases won the award.

Protecting and improving the environment are among Eaton’s highest priorities, and to that end, Eaton has been a dedicated EHS proponent for years.  The company launched its Global Management System of Environment, Safety, Security and Health in August 2005. The global program — known as MESH — integrates all of Eaton's EHS programs under one management system that eliminates duplication and creates a common set of standards. MESH has become an integral part of the Eaton Business System and a critical measure of each facility's business performance. Most importantly, MESH has elevated Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) from a series of isolated activities to a responsibility shared by all 75,000 employees. Eaton has set stringent performance goals for itself, like reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent (adjusted for sales) by 2012. Between 2006 and 2008, the company has achieved a 14.3 percent reduction, adjusted for sales. 

Eaton has received six sustainability and management awards in China so far, including:

  • “Golden Bee Honor Roll”  for achievements in providing sustainable products and services in China -- China WTO Tribune magazine

  • “2008 China Excellent Corporate Citizen” -- Corporate Citizen Committee of China Association of Social Workers
  • “Multinational Company (MNC) Contribution Award for 30 years of Reform & Opening up” -- China Enterprise News
