Eaton's Energy Saver Rectifier Verified by Independent Testing Laboratory

Date: October 13, 2010

CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND… Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) confirmed the Eaton® Energy Saver Rectifier (APR48-ES) to be 96.4 percent efficient. Compared to existing technology, the Energy Saver Rectifier is intended to reduce customers’ network direct current (DC) power waste energy by 50 percent or more, achieve significant energy savings for customers in the telecommunications sector, and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

During UL testing, the rectifier proved highly efficient throughout a wide variety of power output levels. Its power efficiency exceeded 96 percent for more than 30 percent of its total output range and overall efficiency exceeded 95 percent over more than 80 percent of its total output range.

“The Eaton Energy Saver Rectifier is designed to bring real energy cost savings for customers, even when network power demand fluctuates widely over the total power output range” said Richard Moore, product manager, Eaton. “The rectifier produces less heat, and requires less cooling. As a result, the technology can yield significant total cost savings in a short period of time.”

This Energy Saver Rectifier is compatible with Eaton’s Smart Energy feature called Load Based Rectifier Shutdown (LBRS). The SC200 System Controller shares loads between rectifiers for optimal efficiency by switching rectifiers off and on according to power demand. This helps to optimize the operating efficiency of the entire system, enabling it to stay in the peak efficiency range. The Eaton Energy Saver Rectifier is also fully compatible with Eaton’s 3G series of DC power systems.

A globally respected standards authority, UL confirmed the 96.4 percent efficiency of the rectifier, as well as other specification ratings. The Class I, 48 volt (V) rectifier is rated for 100 – 240V alternating current (AC) input, 50-60 hertz (Hz), with 2000 watt DC output. During third-party testing, the efficiency of the rectifier was examined over the full power range, up to 2 kilowatts (kW), using the standard operating voltage of 54.5Vdc.

The Energy Saver Rectifier has been recognized as an Eaton Green Solution, the special designation for products and solutions that go well beyond Eaton’s high standards to provide exceptional environmental benefit.
