Pittsburgh …Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Certification for Commercial Interiors from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for its facility expansion in Hanover, Md.

The Hanover facility is powered by Eaton’s industry-leading, smart green building, energy-efficient products including Pow-R-Command™ lighting control panelboards and Power Xpert® metering, which significantly contribute to environmental protection and emissions reduction. Other Eaton energy-efficient products that were installed include Integrated Facility Switchboards (IFS), motor control centers, transformers and busway systems.

LEED is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy-efficient and highest-performing buildings. Buildings constructed in accordance with LEED standards are, on average, 26 percent more efficient than other facilities. LEED certification of Eaton’s Hanover facility was based on a number of efficient design and construction features that positively affect the project as well as the greater Baltimore region. These features include:

• 40% potable water reduction
• 25% lighting power reduction
• Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment efficiency and CO2 monitoring
• Two-thirds of the equipment is Energy Star
• More than 75% of the waste from the expansion was recycled/salvaged or otherwise diverted from landfills
• Materials reuse, recycled content and certified wood
• Low-emitting materials throughout, mitigating or eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
• Increased controllability of the lighting and mechanical systems

The Hanover location is Eaton’s third LEED facility in the nation. In 2010, Cleveland-based Eaton relocated from two Maryland offices, in Columbia and Elkridge, to occupy all of 7451 Coca Cola Drive, a 50,850-square-foot building in Hanover. Eaton has made a public commitment to the Business Roundtable to reduce worldwide greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 18% by 2012. The company is measuring and reporting on performance through Eaton’s Sustainability Report which, since 2006, has been part of Eaton Corporation’s Annual Report.
