Eaton UPSs and Software Help Xen Users Protect Data and Save Time, Resources and Money

Date: March 23, 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. …Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced its Intelligent Power® Protector software is now functional with Xen® virtualized architecture, an open-source managed server virtualization platform for data centers. This new capability helps Xen users keep their data safe with Eaton’s uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and power management software by protecting virtual machines and facilitating graceful shutdown of virtual servers — saving time, resources and money.

This furthers Eaton’s foray into the open-source community with software that is flexible and secure. The Xen hypervisor, controlling software within the server architectures, is a fast, secure virtualization infrastructure solution that reduces data center costs by transforming static and complex information technology (IT) environments into more dynamic, easy-to-manage virtualized data centers. When electrical power is compromised, Intelligent Power Protector facilitates automatic, graceful shutdown of virtual machines, servers, and network devices powered by Eaton’s UPSs.

“As the industry leader in terms of breadth and depth of our offerings for managing virtual environments, we’re pleased to add Xen virtualized architecture compatibility to our Intelligent Power Protector software,” said Hervé Tardy, senior vice president and general manager, Eaton’s Distributed Power Quality Division. “Eaton has championed the Network UPS Tools open-source project for many years and strongly believes in the power of open-source solutions.”

Eaton’s Intelligent Power Protector software resides on the Xen hypervisor and supports specific server architectures, including Citrix® XenServer® 5.6 x86, open-source Xen 2.6 on Red Hat® 5 x86_64 and open-source Xen 3.2 on Debian® 5.0 (Lenny) x86_64. In addition, through its versatile user interface, Intelligent Power Protector shows users detailed information about connected servers and UPSs through USB, serial or network communication. The software has a clear, easy-to-use, multilingual interface available on any computer with a Web browser.

This integration follows on the heels of Eaton’s power management software compatibility with VMware® and Microsoft® virtualization server solutions.

Intelligent Power Protector is available free of charge; for more information and to download this software (Linux® compatible version) and scripts for the Xen hypervisor applications, visit www.eaton.com/intelligentpower.
