Eaton celebrates MANGO project partnership milestone and contributes to efficiency in high performance computing

LE LIEU, SWITZERLAND  Eaton is today proud to announce the next phase of its partnership with the research and innovation project MANGO (exploring Manycore Architectures for Next-GeneratiOn HPC systems), an EU Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging technologies (FET) HPC initiative for addressing next-generation high performance computing (HPC) systems.

MANGO project was set up to achieve optimum resource efficiency in future HPC applications sensitive to the quality of service, with ambitious cross-boundary exploration of architecture. HPC applications like online video transcoding and medical imaging require power efficiency and a more robust quality of service. Nowadays, the failure to meet any of these requirements is more critical than ever.

Eaton is proud to invest in critical forward-looking technologies to drive innovation and change. Becoming a partner in the MANGO project was a logical step for the organization. Eaton was the project partner identified to help achieve the quality of service objective for MANGO for the past three years by providing a real-time monitoring software platform for power, thermal and computing activity and the development of disruptive technologies for low-loss and low voltage power distribution.

Eaton committed to physically hosting the complete MANGO demonstration platform that will be able to demonstrate how applications, with an improved balance between the power consumption, performance and quality of service, work in practice. During the first 29 months of the project until June 2018, each participating partner has had access to a very small component of the hardware solution to perform its preparatory work. The milestone 29 therefore marked a pivotal moment for the project because it was the first time where all of the hardware resources of the project were assembled together in a single location at Eaton’s Swiss Research, Development & Innovation lab in Le Lieu.

This lab was made accessible to people thanks to a dedicated virtual event where Eaton created a remote access network. The Eaton team provided its suite of data centre infrastructure such as racks and UPS’. To keep the use of electrical power to a minimum, the Eaton team also developed disruptive technologies for low-loss and low-voltage direct current power distribution to the racks.

This event has officially marked the start of a new phase of the project where the Eaton team will push this integration to new levels, in order to reach the final validation stage of the project in a couple of months’ time.
