Eaton seeks to expand oil & gas business in Norway
Date: May 24, 2012
OSLO … Eaton Corporation today held a Technology Day in Oslo to showcase its wide range of electro-hydraulic systems and products for the oil and gas sector, targeting exploration and production (E&P) companies operating in Norwegian waters.
A global diversified industrial manufacturer, Eaton is engaged in a major global sales and marketing drive to grow its business in offshore E&P. Last year Eaton appointed Gardiner Henderson to head of the global oil and gas business and accelerate profitable growth in this key industry sector. He was previously responsible for ABB’s global oil and gas strategy.
“Norway is an important market globally due to its prominence in upstream technology development, innovative field production techniques, carbon capture and storage pilots, and as a strategic base for Arctic exploration,” according to Gardiner Henderson.
“Eaton offers a comprehensive component and service solution portfolio tailored for oil and gas applications with a proven track record of helping our industry pursue safer, cleaner and more sustainable exploration and production – all with a competitive total cost of ownership structure.”
“Eaton has been in the oil & gas industry for decades, and our product brand names, such as Vickers, Aeroquip and Cutler-Hammer are well known, ” Henderson said.
The Technology Day, held at Ullevaal Business Class, was attended by more than 50 representatives from more than 30 companies including Aker Solutions, National Oilwell Varco, Rambøll Oil & Gas, Aibel, Kongsberg Gruppen and Wärtsilä. In addition to Henderson, Eaton was represented by Astrid Mozes, President Hydraulics Group EMEA and technical experts Bob Yaniello, Craig Reed, Dr Egon Lechner and Ankur Ganguli.
Industry analyst Jarand Rystad, CEO and Chairman of Rystad Energy AS, shared his perspective on the outlook for the oil and gas industry in Norway and worldwide drawing on his firm’s latest research data.
According to Astrid Mozes, the industry is increasingly operating in a world of extremes and a new era of zero tolerance which places a high importance on safety, reliability, efficiency and productivity to maximise uptime, reduce costs and protect asset integrity.
Eaton unveiled an interactive drill ship which demonstrates some of the key applications provided by Eaton. These key applications include:
· Synflex blow-out prevention umbilicals. Eaton’s Synflex range includes the world’s fastest subsea hydraulic signal hose. Used in the latest Synflex BOP umbilicals, this enables faster and more effective response to subsea events. And, with Synflex hose available in lengths up to 10,000 feet, hydraulic blow-out prevention (BOP) systems can now be extended to even greater depths. Synflex subsea hoses are engineered to withstand the extreme pressures and temperatures of subsea environments to keep systems up and running, safely and reliably. Synflex works over control umbilicals to support subsea production and work over operations. They contain electrical and fiber-optic cables and high-pressure hoses as well as support applications that help control oil flow from multiple wells.
· Airflex advanced braking system to meet the extreme safety demands of the oil and gas industry in hoisting drawworks. It was designed specifically for continuous slip service to absorb and dissipate thermal loads associated with the most severe clutch and brake applications.
· Eaton’s new LifeSense condition-based, hydraulic hose monitoring system, which means hydraulic hose failures will no longer be a major concern for winch/crane operators. The patented LifeSense hose monitors the health of hydraulic hose assemblies, detects events that have been shown to be symptomatic of the hose beginning to fail, and notifies the user prior to failure with enough time to replace hose before it fails. This enhances safety, reduces system downtime, and increases service life by up to 50%.
· Eaton’s Advanced Active Heave Compensation System allows continuous Winch and Crane operations under rough high seas conditions to lower operating costs while increasing uptime and safety. For deep water and ultra-deep water handling, a lighter and more elastic HMPE fiber rope is used instead of a steel wire for handling capacity, this leads to more dynamic amplification at the deeper water. Eaton developed an advanced AHC solution that: compensates both vessel motion and cable dynamics, resulting in more accuracy in payload position compensation and offers reduced power consumption, leveraging Eaton’s expertise in Hydraulic Hybrid and high flow intelligent valve. Numerous Eaton Electronic and Hydraulic products make up the advanced active heave compensation system: Cylinders, Manifold, HPU, Motors, Valves, Hoses, Electrical Controllers. These include:
o The world's largest and most capable cylinders with Eatonite™ DNV certified coating for improved wear and corrosion resistance in motion compensation systems.
o Eatonite™ laser coating offers state of the art protection for surfaces that are exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as salt spray. This extends the life of products and reduces costs of unplanned maintenance and equipment downtime
o Eaton AxisPro™ proportional valves provide integrated programable control capabilities in sophisticated electrohydraulic axis control applications. AxisPro™ Proportional Valves provide faster response time and for more accurate and safe load positioning during high seas states.
· The ARCON arc free design that helps avoid the potentially catastrophic consequences of arc flash in power systems and ensuring a rapid and safe restart after a shut-down or blackout
· Single and three-phase UPS solutions. The robust, tried and tested UPS product family, used in a wide range of applications for oil and gas, combines technical innovations, a wide scope of functions and maximum efficiency. Their unprecedented level of power performance, reliability and energy savings make Eaton three-phase UPSs the best solution to protect critical applications. Their Energy Advantage Architecture (EAA), means they are up to 99 % efficient for significantly lower energy consumption.
Eaton will hold a further six Technology Days this year in the region including events in Turkey, Germany, South Africa and Russia.
