Eaton FLEX program adds muscle to Florida truck dealer’s parts department

“FLEX is a great program and the pricing is right where it needs to be. When most people change the transmission they also will typically change the clutch and the oil. But the best part is the three-year warranty. Most of our competitors can only offer one year.”

Background

Tom Nehl Truck Company is a full service truck dealer servicing a broad spectrum of commercial truck customers in northern Florida and southern Georgia. With corporate headquarters located in Jacksonville, FL, the company also maintains locations in Lake City, FL, and Waycross, GA.

Tom Nehl stocks and sells medium-and heavy-duty Freightliner trucks, heavy-duty Volvo trucks, medium-duty Isuzu trucks, and Sprinter vans.

The company takes a tremendous amount of pride in its service and parts operations, according to Ray Faulk, parts manager for the Jacksonville location. His department has 60 employees and stocks parts for not only the vehicles that Tom Nehl sells, but also for every make and model of truck available in the U.S.

Challenge

That dedication to customer service requires Faulk to keep a generous amount of product in stock. Faulk says Tom Nehl Truck Company has one of the largest parts inventories in the area.

“A lot of dealers do not want to have the money on the floor,” says Faulk. “Conversely, we believe when a truck is down, on-time parts availability is critically important. That’s why we’re willing to make the investment.”

Parts are available at the Jacksonville location around the clock from 7 a.m. every Monday to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Ten drivers are on-hand for deliveries to further ensure the company’s parts are always where they have to be whenever needed.

While Faulk, of course, very much enjoys selling any of his parts, he does admit to being especially partial to a select few.

Solution

“No other vendor out there has anything close to an Eaton transmission or an Eaton clutch,” he claims. “Eaton has been a big part of our business for a long time.”

When Eaton recently introduced the company’s FLEX Reman™ Transmission program to Faulk, the 30-year trucking industry veteran says his regard for the company’s products reached an all-time high.

Launched in 2012, the FLEX Reman Transmission program is a specially packaged line of Eaton remanufactured and aftermarket components that gives customers additional genuine replacement parts choices and 12 months of extra warranty coverage. When customers purchase a combination of a FLEX Reman or standard Eaton Fuller re-manufactured transmission with an Eaton Advantage Series™ clutch and Roadranger® lubricants, the transmission warranty coverage is extended from two to three years.

In addition to the use of OEM-quality parts, FLEX Reman transmissions have roughly 20 percent more new parts than most other remanufactured transmissions, and all units are performance tested to ensure Eaton standards and specifications are met.

Eaton Solo Advantage® and Easy Pedal Advantage® clutches feature extended 50,000-mile standard lubrication intervals for line-haul applications, premium patent-pending release bearings, and added protection against potentially harmful driveline vibrations because of the excellent dampening that results from Eaton’s Vibration Control Technology (VCT).

Eaton’s Solo Advantage is a self-adjusting clutch that results in reduced maintenance due to eliminating the need for time consuming manual adjustments for improved uptime. It is also ideally suited for trucks with hydraulic linkages. The Easy Pedal Advantage clutch requires manual adjustments and is designed for quick and easy maintenance.

Roadranger synthetic lubricants, including SAE 50 transmission fluid and SAE 75W-90 and SAE 80W 140 drivetrain fluids, feature high-quality raw materials and additives to offer superior heavy-duty truck performance.

The FLEX package is available for standard linehaul applications in the United States and Canada.

Result

“It’s a great program and the pricing is right where it needs to be,” says Faulk. “When most people change the transmission they also will typically change the clutch and the oil. But the best part is the three-year warranty. Most of our competitors can only offer one year.

“We always have five to six of the FLEX transmissions on-hand. That is the best way to move them. When a truck is down we can respond immediately.”

He can respond just as fast when customers only want a clutch.

“Other than FLEX products we sell a lot of clutches,” says Faulk. “We buy them in bulk to get the best pricing. It is not at all unusual for us to order 80 to 100 at a time so we can have complete coverage.”

Then again, he sells a lot of just about any part you can find on a truck. But one of his biggest revenue generators is Eaton.

“Eaton has been around forever and everybody knows that name,” adds Faulk. “There is no doubt they are helping us be a profitable company.”
