Employee Action

Eaton has a long tradition of public service and commitment to the communities in which it operates. In 1915, Joseph O. Eaton, the company's founder, together with other community leaders, championed The Cleveland Federation for Charity and Philanthropy, a volunteer-driven system to study human care needs, provide a mechanism for financially supporting social service agencies, and to oversee allocations-spawning Cleveland's first United Way. Later, in 1953, Eaton became one of the first companies to establish a corporate foundation, the Eaton Charitable Fund, to support public charities.

United Way ranks first among the many organizations Eaton supports in the U.S. We’re ranked among the top one-third of the nation’s contributors to the United Way, and our per-capita giving exceeds that of many companies much larger than Eaton. During 2007, the combination of Eaton employee pledges and the company’s charitable match totaled more than $5 million for the United Way.

Eaton’s strong commitment to the United Way goes beyond the dollars contributed. Three of our recent CEOS have served as chairman of the Greater Cleveland United Way campaigns.

Many Eaton employees provide leadership for their local campaigns or serve as members of review panels or as loaned executives. Employees volunteer to paint shelters, sort clothing and clean up yards for United Way agencies in their communities.

Volunteerism is well-ingrained in the culture at Eaton, so much so that the company has developed an annual global award to recognize exception volunteers – the Stover Volunteerism Awards.
