Metrics for Improving Environmental Performance
Saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to combat climate change are central to Eaton’s overall commitment to sustainability. More than a responsibility, we believe sustainability is pivotal to our future success, helping us to drive the energy efficient power management solutions our customers need and the world demands.
We continue to strengthen our efforts to reduce Eaton’s carbon footprint and enhance our workplaces through our structured, global Management System for Environment, Safety and Health (MESH). Part of this effort includes reporting our environmental performance to the public.
Our efforts are guided by a longstanding philosophy of “doing business right,” which inspires how we live and work, how we design products, and how we manage our people and operations. In keeping with this philosophy, we are participants in the Business Roundtable’s Climate RESOLVE and SEE Change programs, in which we pledged to reduce our GHG emissions by 18 percent, indexed for sales, by 2012. Eaton surpassed that goal one year early by reducing GHG emissions by 23 percent from 2006-2011. Our new goals: By 2015, reduce GHG emissions by 25 percent, waste to landfill by 30 percent, and water consumption by 20 percent (all indexed for sales).
We’ve also joined the Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now LEADER program, pledging to reduce our energy use by 25 percent, indexed for sales, between 2006 and 2016. Progress is audited by a third party and reported in our Annual Report and on this web site on a quarterly basis.
