Rising Stem and Culvert Valves

Rising Stem and Culvert Valves

Water levels in locks are often controlled by a complex system of rising stem and culvert valves. To modernize age-old mechanisms, Eaton hydraulic power units, cylinders, and electrical controls are called upon to improve lock operation and reduce maintenance. For instance, custom, stainless-steel power units power vertically mounted cylinders that open and close the Panama Canal’s rising stem valves, which control water flow through culverts. Each unit has a redundant-style, dual 30-horsepower electric motor pump grouped with Eaton’s new load-sensing, pressure-compensated piston pumps.
