When we shop online, send an email, search on Google, stream a video, “tweet” or update our Facebook status, we are creating digital information — data that travels across cyberspace and is eventually stored and protected in data centers, buildings that house row upon row of servers processing millions of transactions per second.
“When you walk into a Facebook data center… it’s filled with row after row after row of racks – all painted Facebook blue. There are literally thousands of servers and thousands of hard drives in these buildings…The building is dark because they’re saving energy, and all the racks glow blue”
