Eaton Selected To Supply Hydrogen Fuel Cell Blowers For Vancouver, British Columbia, And London Buses

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that ISE Corp., a leading supplier of hybrid drive systems, has selected the Eaton Fuel Cell Cathode Blower for use in its hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses to be delivered to BC Transit, of Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2009 and to Transport for London, London, England, by 2010.

Eaton’s Fuel Cell Cathode Blower is an electrically driven version of the company’s automotive market-proven Twin Vortices Series™ (TVS™) supercharger. For fuel cell applications, the TVS™ supercharger is mated to a highly efficient brushless motor that spins the supercharger at high-speeds, efficiently moving air through the fuel cell where the oxygen in the air is combined with hydrogen to generate electricity.

“With ISE’s collaboration and support, we’re pleased to offer our fuel cell technology to the heavy-duty vehicle industry,” said Glenn Gouldey, vice president technology and planning – Eaton’s Automotive Group. “Environmental initiatives and manufacturing quality products remain a top priority at Eaton.”

ISE will supply approximately nine hydrogen-powered buses to Transport for London (TfL), five of which will generate power using fuel cells along, with 20 hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses to BC Transit.

The Eaton TVS™ supercharger is an all-new Roots-type positive displacement supercharger that features twin four-lobe rotors that are twisted 160-degrees. By comparison, the original Eaton supercharger features three lobes twisted 60 degrees. The fourth lobe and added twist creates a smooth, highly efficient flow of air with improved noise and vibration characteristics.

With sales of $1.6 billion in 2007 and 11,000 employees around the world, Eaton’s Automotive Group supplies the automotive industry with critical components that reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and improve vehicle stability and performance. Principal products include engine valves and valve train components, transmission and engine controls, superchargers, locking and limited slip differentials, cylinder heads and fluid conveyance components.

Eaton Corporation is a diversified power management company with 2007 sales of $13 billion. Eaton is a global technology leader in electrical systems for power quality, distribution and control; hydraulics components, systems and services for industrial and mobile equipment; aerospace fuel, hydraulics and pneumatic systems for commercial and military use; and truck and automotive drivetrain and powertrain systems for performance, fuel economy and safety. Eaton has approximately 80,000 employees and sells products to customers in more than 150 countries. For more information, visit www.eaton.com.
