Eaton To Supply Key Green Products To Green Building Alliance’s New Pittsburgh HQ

PITTSBURGH … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that it will supply three green product solutions to the Green Building Alliance (GBA), an affiliate of U.S. Green Building Council. The solutions will contribute to LEED certification of GBA’s new space in the River Walk Corporate Centre at 333 East Carson Street in the South Side of Pittsburgh. The space, known to Pittsburgh natives as the Terminal Building, will be used as the new headquarters of the GBA and will showcase regional green building products and practices.

“Our ultimate vision for this space is that it will not only be our new headquarters and an example of how old buildings can be made more energy efficient, but that it will become a first stop shop for green building products and going green in our region,” said Rebecca Flora, executive director of the Green Building Alliance and Chairman of the Board of the U.S. Green Building Council. “The majority of the products used will come from organizations such as Eaton.”

The three Eaton products chosen by the GBA will aide in lighting control, measurement of energy usage and will ultimately help to reduce energy consumption. These products include the Pow-R-Command lighting control system (PRC 2000), IQ 250 Electronic Power Meter, and the Power Xpert Gateway (PXG 400).

“Managing and measuring the way that we use energy is extremely important to the environment today,” said John White, Eaton’s energy management and environmental solutions manager. “Eaton is proud to be a part of a project that will showcase what companies can easily do to control energy consumption and, ultimately, be a better friend to the environment.”

While visitors to the GBA may not always remember to turn off the lights, Eaton’s Pow-R-Command lighting control will. The PRC 2000 lighting control system automatically turns lights on and off as needed and includes daylight harvesting capabilities to maximize energy performance - reducing lighting energy use by as much as 30 percent, while maintaining the comfort and well-being of building occupants.

The second product that Eaton is supplying is the IQ 250. This electronic power meter provides accurate real-time power system values, captures waveforms and system events, graphically displaying this data through Eaton’s Power Xpert Gateway for additional and more detailed energy evaluation. Typically used for utility and commercial metering in applications where space is at a premium, the IQ 250 will measure and record energy uses (lighting, plug load, HVAC, etc.) within the GBA space, enhancing energy efficiency.

Finally, Eaton’s PXG 400 will provide the framework to unify the entire power system at the South Side site. It not only provides real-time monitoring of equipment, but has the ability to connect communication and management systems for a holistic approach to the power system. The PXG 400 will provide the GBA with a web-enabled measurement tool so they can demonstrate the energy efficiency of their building operations.

Once renovations are complete, the GBA will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Commercial Interiors certification, and Eaton’s products will contribute to LEED credit points in at least three areas:

• EA Credit 1.2 - Optimize Energy Performance, Lighting Controls;

• EA Credit 3 - Energy Use, Measurement and Payment Accountability;

• IEQ Credit 6.1 - Controllability of Systems, Lighting.

“The Green Building Alliance is making this move to the South Side for two reasons,” said Jeaneen Zappa, deputy director of the Green Building Alliance. “One is that we have outgrown our current certified green building. The second is that Pittsburgh has a lot of older buildings and we want to demonstrate ‘adaptive reuse’, a process that adapts buildings for new uses while retaining their historic features.”

The GBA will be moving into their new space on the South Side in late March 2008.

The GBA, a non profit organization, is a leading advocate for smart solutions for the built environment in western Pennsylvania. The GBA helps to educate the region’s building industry professionals in green building practices, bring together building professionals to build new networks of collaboration in the region, and fund the development of innovative green building products. In addition, it offers research services and technical support for green building projects and advocates for the economic benefits of green building.
