LV DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS
Dry Type Distribution Transformers
The adoption of TP-1 transformer efficiency levels, as part of the EPACT 2005 legislation, has left a void in the area of “next step up” in transformer performance and for those looking to “go green” with their electrical infrastructure. The Eaton E3 (CSL-3 2007 compliant) transformer can fill that void.
The basic purpose of a transformer is voltage transformation as near as practically possible to the load for economy and distribution of power. Typical loads for dry-type distribution transformers include lighting, heating, air conditioners, fans, and machine tools. Such loads are found in commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential structures. Eaton's dry type distribution transformers feature:
- Frequency - Cutler-Hammer standard dry-type distribution transformers are designed for 60 hertz operation. Transformers required for other frequencies must be specifically designed.
- Overload Capability - Short term overload capacity is designed into transformers as required by ANSI. Continuous overload capacity is not deliberately designed into a transformer because the design objective is to be within the allowed winding temperature rise with nameplate loading.
- Seismic Qualified
The family of Cutler-Hammer dry-type distribution transformers is seismically tested, seismically qualified, and exceeds requirements of the Uniform Building Code (UBC), California Code Title 24 and BOCA.
- Taps
Primary taps are available in most ratings to allow compensation for source voltage variations.
- Series-Multiple Windings
Series-multiple windings consist of 2 similar coils in each winding which can be connected in series or parallel (multiple). Transformers with series-multiple windings are designated with a “X” or “/” between the voltage ratings, such as voltages of “120/240” or “240 x 480”. If the series-multiple winding is designated by an “X”, the winding can be connected only for a series or parallel. With the “/” designation, a midpoint also becomes available in addition to the series or parallel connection. As an example, a 120 x 240 winding can be connected for either 120 (parallel) OR 240 (series), but a 120/240 winding can be connected for 120 (parallel), or 240 (series), or 240 with a 120 midpoint.
- Sound Levels
All transformers make some sound mainly due to the vibration generated in its core by alternating flux. All Cutler-Hammer general purpose dry-type distribution transformers are designed with sound levels lower than NEMA ST-20 maximum levels.
