INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY® TVSS

Major Standard Change for Surge Protective Devices (formerly known as Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors)

The primary safety standard for transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS) has undergone major revisions in the past three years. Manufacturers must comply with the latest standard by September 29, 2009. This means all TVSS products listed to the UL 1449 2nd Edition standard can no longer be manufactured after September 29, 2009. All Surge Protective Devices must be designed, tested, manufactured and listed to the UL 1449 3rd Edition standard after this date.

The 3rd edition of this important standard was published in September of 2006. Eaton's Innovative Technology launched its first UL 1449 3rd Edition listed SPD product (XT50/100) in January of 2008.  Innovative Technology received certification for its remaining SPD in May 2009 thus providing a complete line of SPDs to the latest safety standard well in advance of the required date.

Eaton's Innovative Technology  is committed to helping the users of SPDs to understand this new standard and has a comprehensive seminar and supporting documents. For further information or to request a seminar, please contact your local Eaton Innovative Technology Master distributor or email surgeprotection@eaton.com.

Surge Protective Devices

Since 1980, Innovative Technology products have solved the most difficult electrical transient problems for business, industry, government and defense sectors. Now as a part of Eaton Corporation’s electrical business, we are even better positioned to deliver state-of-the-art customer solutions.

Why Innovative Technology SPD Products?

TVSS Pioneer
Since 1980, IT has designed and manufactured the leading Surge Protective Devices in the industry. We hold the patents and intellectual resources that have been leading the way in transient voltage surge suppression. Innovative Technology products and technologies protect electrical, data, telecom circuits and electronic equipment from the effects of lightning induced voltages, external switching transients and internally generated electrical transients.

System Shield
Although external transient surges include lightning strikes, utility grid switching and equipment action at adjacent buildings are easily recognized high-energy surge events, they only account for 20% of all surges faced by a facility. 80% of surges are the results of internal switching transients (turning on/off motors, transformers, photocopiers, etc.). Wiring, grounding errors and surges (also known as transient voltages) are among the most common power quality issues facing facilities today – resulting in safety concerns, equipment damage and costly downtime.

System Shield is a proven, effective method for total facility protection. This layered approach protects all of your electrical and electronic equipment, from powerful motors to sophisticated lighting controls and sensitive computer based controllers.

Watch the 5 minute System Shield video (66MB) detailing the system shield approach for total surge protection.
