POWER XPERT® ARCHITECTURE
Your key to managing power as a strategic asset

Taken together, the Energy Policy Act, the American Competitiveness Initiative and the Advanced Energy Initiative provide an aggressive strategy for tackling the long-term energy challenges we face. The Energy Policy Act allows for businesses to get deductions for new or renovated buildings that save 50% or more of projected annual energy costs for heating, cooling and lighting compared with model national standards, and partial deductions for efficiency improvements to individual lighting, HVAC and water heating, or envelope systems.

Ave Maria Video StillAve Maria University, the first new Catholic University in the US in nearly 40 years, successfully integrated IT and Facilities with a PowerChain Management solution from Eaton. In this video, Bryan Mehaffey, Ave Maria’s Vice President of Technology Systems and Engineering, describes how Eaton’s Power Xpert architecture formed the foundation for effective energy monitoring, energy conservation and cost reductions.

In most organizations, many elements of the critical facilities infrastructure are not monitored, and those that are monitored may not talk to each other.  It’s impossible to see the big picture, to correlate events across the power system, or to drill into detail for quick diagnosis and action.  IT and facility managers need a framework to integrate and analyze data from all their power equipment— and the tools to determine appropriate action.

PowerChain™ Management solutions from Eaton focus on the power system as a strategic, integrated asset. The backbone of this strategy is our Power Xpert Architecture which consists of hardware, software and communication elements including:

These elements work together to bring diverse power components into a unified system that can be monitored and managed effectively.

To see the Power Xpert Architecture in action, visit our Power Xpert Showcase, which contains live, flash, and video demonstrations of the Power Xpert Architecture components.

The Power Xpert Architecture approach to managing power as a strategic asset is unified, open, web-enabled and about time.

Unified approach. Hardware and software elements work together to provide a unified management view of the diverse facilities infrastructure, including equipment from many manufacturers.

Open standards. With an open standards approach designed for scalability, you can create a simple system to the most complex with ease. Open communication protocols allow all devices to communicate - even third party software can talk to Power Xpert devices. Moreover, with Power Xpert software, Eaton’s electrical products and other third party devices can be brought into one consolidated system

Web-enabled solution. Unlike traditional power distribution and monitoring equipment, Power Xpert components are all Web-enabled, and they speak traditional IT languages, such as Ethernet, SNMP and Modbus.  That means the Power Xpert Architecture fits right into existing IT networks and management systems, such as HP OpenView and IBM Director.

Timing is everything. The Power Xpert network time server synchronizes equipment clocks, so you can accurately correlate events at different points in the system providing information that is vital for troubleshooting.

That’s what you gain with the Power Xpert Architecture, an innovative direction in facilities monitoring and management.
