SURGE PROTECTIVE DEVICES

Major Standard Change for Surge Protective Devices (formerly known as Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors)

The primary safety standard for transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS) has undergone major revisions in the past three years with mandatory compliance by manufacturers required by September 29, 2009. Even the name of the standard has changed from UL Standard for Safety for Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors, UL 1449 to UL Standard for Safety for Surge Protective Devices, UL 1449. This means that TVSS listed to the UL 1449 2nd Edition standard will no longer be able to be manufactured after September 29, 2009. All Surge Protective Devices must be designed, tested, manufactured and listed to the UL 1449 3rd Edition standard after this date.

Specifiers must begin changing their specifications very soon in order to ensure that the SPDs specified on electrical construction projects that will be bid, submitted, purchased or installed after September 29, 2009 will meet this new standard. UL 1449 3rd Edition SPDs have many new terms, values and specifications that do not appear on UL 1449 2nd Edition TVSS. To avoid possible rejection, resubmittal, requoting and substitution of TVSS with SPDs, consulting and specifying engineers should begin to change their specifications.  End users should begin to request UL 1449 3rd Edition SPDs for future projects.

The 3rd edition of this important standard was published in September of 2006. Eaton launched its first UL 1449 3rd Edition listed SPDs in January of 2008 and is one of the few manufacturers that have any UL 1449 3rd Edition SPDs currently available. Eaton will be launching many more models of UL 1449 3rd Edition SPDs in the coming months, well in advance of the September 29, 2009 compliance date.

Eaton is committed to helping consulting and specifying engineers, end-users, OEMs and installers understand this new standard and is developing a comprehensive seminar and supporting documents to clearly explain how to specify, choose and purchase a UL 1449 3rd Edition SPD. For further information or to request a seminar, please contact your local Eaton sales office or email surgeprotection@eaton.com.

Today, we all rely more heavily than ever on sensitive electrical equipment. Modern day electronic equipment is getting faster, smaller, more efficient and very complex. These improvements have been made in all microprocessor-based equipment over the years, and this progress will continue. The tradeoff in faster speed is that equipment is becoming increasingly more susceptible to surges.

That's why surge protection is so critical, and why Eaton engineers build so much quality into our full line of Cutler-Hammer surge protection products. Whether the application involves residential homes, telecommunication facilities, hospitals, schools or heavy industrial plants, the utilization of surge protection devices provides protection against the damaging effects of lightning, utility switching, switching electric motors, and more.

At Eaton we pride ourselves on providing the best value for the money. With a full range of innovative, reliable products, we have the right surge protection solution for any application. Each product is independently tested, and backed by the largest engineering and technical support in the industry.
