Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters

ARC FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTERS

AFCI MovieThe following movie features a device specifically designed to accurately and safely recreate arc faults.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) meet the requirements of the UL Standard for Safety, UL 1699 that covers devices intended to mitigate the effects of arcing faults that may pose a risk of fire ignition under certain conditions if the arcing persists.

FIRE-GUARD™ Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI)

The FIRE-GUARD AFCI is a residential circuit breaker that incorporates advanced Electronic Technology which recognizes the unique current and/or voltage signatures associated with arcing faults, and acts to interrupt the circuit to reduce the likelihood of an electrical fire.

With the Cutler-Hammer FIRE-GUARD AFCI, mitigation of arcing faults is combined with the protection afforded by standard residential circuit breakers.  The FIRE-GUARD AFCI mitigates arcing directly as well as responding to overcurrents by conventional thermal and magnetic trips.

FIRE-GUARD AFCI can also be equipped with 5 mA ground fault personnel protection providing a residential circuit breaker that mitigates arcing faults, protects against thermal overloads and short circuits, and in addition provides 5 mA ground fault protection in one integrated design.

Eaton Corporation has the widest selection of AFCI product solutions on the market today.  For a complete listing of AFCI products including Residential and Commercial/Industrial applications, please see the AFCI product Selection Guide to your right.  Please explore our product offerings in more detail through the links below.

Branch Feeder AFCI
Required by the 1999, 2002, and 2005 NEC (through January 1, 2008)

The Branch Feeder AFCI mitigates low current and high current arcing faults in common installed wiring (Type NMB). It mitigates parallel arcing faults in the complete circuit including connected cords. Parallel arcing faults can occur from line to neutral or line to ground. These Arcing faults are in parallel with the load and produce the most energy of all arcing faults. Eaton has one of the widest selections of branch feeder AFCI products on the market. For complete catalog number references please see attached product listing.

Combination Type AFCI - NEW
Required by the 2005 NEC (as of January 1, 2008) and the 2008 NEC

The Combination Type AFCI includes all of the protection offered by the Branch Feeder AFCI and in addition, provides enhanced detection of persistent low current arcing faults with association mitigation of fire hazards in the cords connected to the outlets. For complete catalog number references please see attached product listing.

Hand Held Circuit Analyzer

Eaton’s hand held circuit analyzer serves as a handy troubleshooting tool for contractors and electrical inspectors. The circuit analyzer provides accurate evaluation of AFCI and GFCI devices while also testing for faulty wiring conditions.

Eaton's experience and knowledge of AFCI breakers led to the development of a patented feature of the analyzer. The feature allows the user to verify whether they have a grounded neutral with a simple press of a button. In addition to evaluating AFCI circuits, this unit provides testing of both 30mA and 5mA GFCI devices.

Accessories included with AFGFTESTER are: An alligator clip attachment that tests hard-wired circuits that lack a receptacle, such as smoke detectors. An adapter is included for connecting to 2 prong receptacles often found in older homes. A light socket adapter is available for connecting to items such as ceiling fan lights or recessed lighting. A black carrying case is included. Contact your local home center or Cutler-Hammer electrical distributor to get yours today.
