AUXILIARY POWER

Industry-leading value creation is the driving force behind Eaton’s new Cutler-Hammer Auxiliary Power Heavy-Duty Safety Switch. This new switch gives the contractor an alternative to running a separate 120 volt circuit to the rooftop or other locations where a receptacle outlet is required.

NEC Section 210.63 for Heating, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Equipment requires a 125 volt, singlephase, 15- or 20-ampere-rated receptacle outlet be installed Fusible, 100 Ampere, 240 Volt Auxiliary Power Heavy-Duty Safety Switch at an accessible location for the servicing of heating, airconditioning and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle must be located on the same level and within 25 ft. (7.5 m) of the heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle outlet is not to be connected to the load side of the equipment disconnecting means.

This code requirement presents some challenges to the contractor especially for rooftop air-conditioning (RTU) installations. The contractor is forced to run a separate 120 volt circuit to the roof. The length of this run can vary greatly at each installation and can create several hours of labor for the contractor in addition to the increasingly costly materials required for the 120 volt circuit.

The Auxiliary Power Heavy-Duty Safety Switch is selected as an EC&M Product of the Year Category winner for 2006 in the power distribution equipment category.
