MANUAL PIPELINE STRAINERS

Eaton’s Manual Strainers are used by industrial and commercial customers to protect their process piping equipment by removing debris from the liquid that flows through pipelines. Products include duplex basket strainers, simplex basket strainers, Y strainers and Tee type strainers. Eaton offers pipeline basket strainers in sizes from ¼” to 48”.

Simplex Model 72 Strainer_63x63

Simplex Basket Strainers
A simplex basket strainer is used where the line can be shut down for short periods to clean or change baskets. It becomes an integral part of the pipeline and all flow passes through it.

Duplex Model 53 Strainer_63x63Duplex Basket Strainers
A duplex basket strainer can operate continuously and never has to be shut down for cleaning. A diverter plug is carefully fitted to the strainer body. It permits flow to pass either left or right. When one basket becomes full, the flow is shifted to the other one.

Y-Strainer_Blue_63x63Y-Strainers
Y-strainers are devices for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. They are used in pipelines to protect pumps, meters, control valves, steam traps, regulators and other process equipment.

Fabricated Strainer_63x63
Fabricated Strainers
Fabricated strainers, because they are manufactured one at a time, can be made to fit the exact requirements of the application. There are no trade-offs. You get the perfect strainer for your application…you never have to pay for more strainer than you need…or settle for a strainer that won’t quite do the job you want it to.

Overview
The basket or element is the heart of a Eaton Strainer. It is designed to be both effective and durable so that it will function reliably for years. After a particular type of strainer housing has been selected, equal concern should be given to the basket or screen design and the perforation or mesh size – for this alone determines the ultimate functionality and performance of the strainer.

Cylindrical Baskets
Cylindrical Baskets for Simplex and Duplex Strainers up to 8" Size
The strainer cover presses down on the bow-shaped handle and assures a tight seal. This is the standard, basic strainer basket, available in stainless steel or Monel, with a wide range of perforations and mesh linings to handle any straining problem.

Heavy Duty Cylindrical Baskets
Heavy Duty Cylindrical Baskets for Simplex and Duplex Strainers up to 8" Size
Heavy duty strainer baskets are reinforced in critical areas to stand up to the most demanding applications.

Pleated Baskets
Pleated Type Baskets for Model 72 Simplex and for Model 50 Duplex Sizes 10" to 18"
Pleated, open type baskets have a very low pressure loss. The convoluted or pleated structure of the screen gives much greater straining area than other designs. Available in plain perforated metal or with a fine mesh lining.

Slanted Top Type Baskets
Slanted Top Type Baskets for Model 510 Simplex and for Model 570 Duplex Sizes 8" to 36"
The slanted, open top design allows fluid to enter easily and cuts down pressure drop loss. By using four of these baskets in each chamber of the strainer, individual basket size is reduced. This means only one person is needed to clean even the largest size baskets.

Magnetic Inserts

Eaton strainer baskets can be supplied with magnetic inserts which are valuable when microscopic iron or steel particles are present. These might pass though a fine mesh lining but the magnetic insert will catch them. Our powerful magnets are encased in stainless steel to prevent corrosion.

Pressure Drop Calculations
To accurately calculate the pressure loss for filters and strainers in a pipeline, proceed as follows:

  • First calculate pressure loss using Cv factor formula at right
  • Take the pressure loss figure obtained in (1) and recalculate it using the appropriate correction factor from the following tables.

Pressure Loss Calculation Using Cv Factor
Filtration Strainers - Pressure Loss Formula

The pressure loss across a strainer or filter can be calculated using the system's flow rate and the Cv factor for that strainer or filter.

For example, a 1 " strainer with a Cv factor of 8 will have a 4 psi pressure loss in a system with a 16 gpm flow rate: (16 ÷ 8) 2 = 4.

Correction Factors for Mesh-Lined Basket

Water Only
Multiply the pressure drop for perforated baskets by the following.

Basket MeshCorrection Factor
40 Mesh1.2
60 Mesh1.4
80 Mesh1.6
100 Mesh1.7
200 Mesh2.0
325 Mesh2.5

Fluids Other Than Water
First-Multiply the pressure drop for water shown in charts by the specific gravity of the liquid. Second-Multiply the corrected pressure drop figure by the following correction factors for more viscous liquids. (Water has a viscosity of 30 SSU.)
