EV charging busway FAQ

What is a busway and how is it powered?

The busway is an efficient power distribution solution that includes three core elements – conductors, housing and insulation. The busway is powered upstream by properly sized overcurrent protection device. The busway can operate up to 600 V and can carry continuous current of 5,000 A.

Can the EV charging busway be used in outdoor installations?

At this time, the EV Charging Busway solution is only available for conditioned indoor installations.

What is an EV bus plug and how is it powered?

Bus plugs are the primary connection points for tapping into the power supplied by the busway. An EV bus plug includes an AC Level 2 EV charger along with a properly sized overcurrent protection device. Bus plugs are easy to install and flexible to relocate along the busway.

What voltage should be supplied to an EV charging busway?

Eaton 19.2 kW AC Level 2 chargers operate from 208 to 240 Vac when applied on 240/120 Vac single-phase 3-wire or 208/120 three-phase 4-wire electrical distribution systems. Contact Eaton for other special voltages and electrical distribution systems.

How many EV bus plugs can I install on an EV charging busway?

This depends on multiple factors including current rating of the busway, voltage rating of the system and the EV charger rating. For example, a 4,000 A busway powered by a 240 V 3-phase Wye system can support up to sixty (60) EV bus plugs rated at 19.2 kW each. This also takes phase balancing into consideration. Each installation can be different and Eaton’s experts are available to support your EV charging needs.

Do EV bus plugs come with cable management?

EV bus plugs come with an accessory retraction unit that provides an effective cable management solution. This retraction unit is spring-loaded with a ratcheted lock. Adjustable tension, secondary support and automatic locking provide additional safety.
