Eaton’s EnergyAware Solution Wins BusinessGreen Future City Technology Award

December 10, 2019

LONDON, THE UNITED KINGDOM ... Eaton’s EnergyAware solution, based on Eaton’s core UPS-as-a-Reserve power technology (UPSaaR), has won the 2019 BusinessGreen Technology Award in the Future City Technology of the Year category.

The award-winning solution has been in development since 2016 and was successfully trialled in data centres and commercial buildings in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Ireland, and is in use to participate in balancing markets in Finland and Ireland.

Eaton’s EnergyAware solution acts as a critical safeguard during potentially damaging power anomalies and helps the grid balance and sustain frequency. This flexibility gives system operators more sources of fast response, helping to tackle challenges created by the higher penetration of renewable sources. Having an energy storage system within a data centre eliminates the need to depend on other traditional sources, like coal, to keep the grid stable, allowing for greater adoption of renewable energies across the grid.

Created as a result of evolved technology and capabilities to manage energy stored in the batteries, this UPS technology has the dual benefit of contributing to the increase of renewable energy sources and being a value-generating asset. It can be used for local energy management solutions or demand side management to optimise utility bills, and aid in frequency regulation initiatives to create an additional revenue stream for operators.

As it stands, the typical returns equate from tens to hundreds of thousands of euros per MW of power allocated to grid support per year. The potential of EnergyAware UPSs to provide services for system operators is considerable. In the UK alone, Eaton has a UPS install base of over 360 MVA capable of performing grid support. This capacity equals typical need for fast reserves in balancing market and is expected to grow as UPS industry and users more widely adopt the technology.

“Today, wind and solar come closest to meeting the growing demand for these clean energy sources. That said, the issue of renewable volatility is still a major concern, making it tough for system operators to consistently balance the electrical supply.”

“We’re delighted the EnergyAware Solution has been recognised for its contribution to powering cities of the future. Eaton identified this issue a number of years’ ago and have been working ever since to create innovative energy storage technologies that help power smarter, cleaner cities by increasing the amount of renewables on the grid through providing much needed stability, whilst still providing a commercial benefit.”

This is the second year in a row Eaton has won the BusinessGreen Future City Technology of the Year Award. In 2018, Eaton won the category for its work on the largest European energy storage system using second-life and new electric vehicle batteries in a commercial building at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam.
