HENGELO, The Netherlands … Eaton has just shipped its one-millionth SF6-free air-insulated switchgear panel in the same year that it is celebrating 60 years of leadership in the development of vacuum switching and air and solid insulated switchgear technology. Eaton's SF6-free switchgear systems are installed across multiple applications and various industry segments on more than three thousand reference sites around the world.
Eaton has been pioneering SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear production since the 1960s, when its Magnefix products became a compact solution for Distribution System Operators. Production lines were set up in the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Australia to meet demand. This compact switchgear made use of cast resin insulation, which enabled the construction of safe and compact switchgear.
In 2002, Eaton introduced its flagship medium-voltage SF₆-free switchgear Xiria. Xiria is metal-enclosed, features dielectric smart design and vacuum switching technology. Xiria switchgear has many applications, from solar plants, commercial industrial buildings, data centers, road and rail infrastructure to Ring Main Units of large grid operators. For example, these switchgears have been installed in the longest land tunnel in the Netherlands, the Gaasperdammer tunnel, and at a large cement plant in Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivskcement. In the coming years Eaton will be supplying Xiria to the Dutch network operator Stedin, which will reduce their use of SF₆-gas by an average of 1,950 kg of SF₆ per year.
Richard Ledgard, general manager, Systems and Services, Power Distribution Division, Eaton, commented: “We are proud that Eaton was the industry's original manufacturer of green, SF₆-free switchgear that has been on the market for decades and beats the total lifetime cost of ownership compared to most SF₆ solutions. Having supplied air-insulated medium-voltage systems to more than three thousand reference sites worldwide, Eaton has proven that there is no real barrier for the market to switch to SF₆-free switchgear.”
