Frequently asked questions about our Battery Management feature

Get answers to common questions about Eaton’s Battery Management feature, such as key benefits, why you need it and how its installed.

What is Eaton’s Brightlayer Battery Management feature?

Our Battery Management feature, which is part of Eaton’s Brightlayer software portfolio, enables real-time monitoring, analysis and management of your uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) batteries. It allows you to track everything related to your batteries, from a single battery block to the comprehensive battery system, and manage all battery documentation, including maintenance and warranty information.

The result is more efficient and effective decision making related to your critical power systems.

Why do I need the Battery Management feature?

If you manage a fleet of UPSs, you know that battery-related issues are the leading cause of power failures. Despite regular inspections, battery health and life can be affected by various factors, including physical damage, overcharging, undercharging, sulphation and poor maintenance.

What are the key benefits of the Battery Management feature?

There are several reasons to purchase our Brightlayer Battery Management feature:

  • Track battery health, status and capacity, regardless of UPS vendor or battery type, through real-time dashboards, visualizations and trend reports.
  • Receive instant notifications for issues that may affect battery life, performance or availability so you can make quick decisions.
  • Manage and store battery documentation, including warranties and service contacts, in one centralized location.
  • Integrate with third-party systems, such as building management and power management systems, for a comprehensive view of all your assets.
  • Identify battery issues well before a power failure occurs. You will know when and where to replace batteries so you can maintain warranty compliance.

Does the Battery Management feature only monitor the UPS battery?

The solution delivers real-time monitoring for both the battery and the UPS unit, giving you a complete system view.

If you decide to purchase other products from the Brightlayer software portfolio, such as our Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software or Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS), you can expand real-time monitoring and management capabilities across all of your IT and operational assets.

What types of batteries can be monitored by the Battery Management feature?

Our solution monitors both wet cells (VRLA, Lead Acid and Ni-Cad) and Lithium-ion battery systems.

My UPSs come with integrated battery testing. Is this sufficient?

No, your UPSs only verify if the battery is functioning at a high level. The integrated testing does not check each battery cell, block or string.

Additionally, the metrics provided by our Battery Management feature give you a complete view of the entire battery system. Not only does it monitor the temperature and humidity of the battery, but also the temperature and humidity within the room or facility.

Does the Battery Management feature only support Eaton equipment?

No, our Battery Management feature is vendor agnostic, meaning you can track battery unit health, status and capacity regardless of UPS vendor.

Does this solution support single-phase UPS batteries?

It depends on the type of single-phase UPS system(s) you manage and monitor. If you operate rack-mounted, single-phase UPS with an internal battery management feature or a stand-alone single-phase UPS system with external batteries, you can leverage our Battery Management feature.

Your Eaton representative will provide more information on the functionality, in addition to other Brightlayer software solutions that are right for you.

How does Eaton install the Battery Management feature?

The Battery Management feature is deployed by Eaton’s certified professionals. They support:

  • Installation and configuration of hardware on wet cell batteries (VRLA, Lead Acid or NiCad)
  • Installation and configuration of the Brightlayer Battery Management feature
  • Configuration of your dashboards and reporting
