We make what matters work. Sustainably.

We are powered by our vision, driven by strategy, guided by our aspirational goals and committed to doing business right.

Improving the quality of life and the environment

The world is experiencing some of the most important secular growth trends that we will experience in our lifetime: The explosive rise of digitalization and the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables – changes being driven by unprecedented growth in electrification and climate change.

Eaton's vision is to improve the quality of life and the environment through the use of power management technologies and services. As a participant in the UN Global Compact, we’ve made a commitment with other companies around the world to continue to adopt sustainable and socially responsible practices. We have a vital purpose in our world because we create the products and services that help our customers – and their customers – to manage and use power.

Stakeholders are calling for nations and businesses to work together to address global climate change. Human-induced climate change has wrought observable impacts on people, infrastructure and ecosystems, including increases in global temperatures, more frequent heatwaves, extreme precipitation in some regions and droughts in others. We understand the urgency of the climate emergency and have developed science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Reducing our GHG emissions with science-based targets

We’re doing our part to reduce the GHG emissions from our operations.

The world will be warmer and more crowded, challenging the quality of life and the environment. And technology will continue to accelerate. With over 125 billion intelligent devices, energy demands will escalate.

We see the trajectory. And we know we can make a difference today with the products we create, the decisions we make and the actions we take.  We are—each and every Eaton employee—dedicated to a better future for our planet and our fellow global citizens.

Our vision is to improve the quality of life and the environment through the use of power management technologies and services

As this transformation plays out, we will be part of the solution. For the generations living today and tomorrow, we make a healthy planet work.  We're working to positively impact the environment while helping to solve pressing climate issues. These and other offerings help fulfil our vision for all our stakeholders, while also creating sustainable value for our shareholders:

  • eMobility systems that  help original equipment manufacturers incorporate hybrid and electric vehicles into their transportation options
  • Microgrid technology that helps deliver clean, reliable and resilient power
  • Home automation that lets home owners make smart energy decisions
  • Energy storage that optimises renewable energy sources and helps meet sustainability targets
  • Intelligent Power systems that collect data, learn and provide actionable insights to optimise power use and continuity
  • Lightweighting parts and components made of advanced materials to reduce fuel usage

Making our value chain more sustainable

It’s not just about what we make, but how we make it.  We strive to use materials wisely, address substances of concern as defined by multiple regulations across the globe, and consider the end-of-life impact of our products. In our operations we focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy and water-reducing processes. More than 120 of our facilities send zero waste to landfill. We have committed to setting a science-based target for our greenhouse gas emissions and are testing state-of-the art manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing and discrete simulations, to maximise productivity while lessening our impact. Our expectations for our operations are also communicated to all our suppliers, and we are working to forge strong relationships with them to amplify the effect of those expectations.

Engaging our employees, giving back to our communities

To make innovative products, we need to provide the best operating environment for our people. Our commitment to the safety and health of our employees reflects our belief that all injuries can be prevented, and we reinforce specific principles to strengthen our Zero Incident Safety Culture. We care about providing meaningful and engaging work for our employees, and ensure that our culture allows them to flourish every day. Creating a motivated, inclusive and diverse workforce is a central focus at Eaton, and we support and train our employees for the changes we see in the coming decades. The Eaton family also extends to the communities where we operate, with our employees rolling up their sleeves to paint, build, repair, clean, plant, teach and more. When the worst happens—such as last year’s hurricanes and other disasters—we mobilise our capabilities and desire to help not only by donating money to disaster relief, but also by providing services and assistance on the ground.

In this, our 2017 Sustainability Report, we invite you to explore the many ways we are improving the quality of life and the environment through the use of power management technologies and services.

By 2030 our goal is to reduce GHG emissions from our operations by 50 % from 2018 levels
By 2030 our goal is to have all of our manufacturing sites zero waste-to-landfill certified

Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Our work aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which were created to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Our strategy and 2030 sustainability targets help advance these UN SDGs:

  • No. 3 Good health and wellbeing
  • No. 5 Gender equality
  • No. 6 Clean water and sanitation
  • No. 7 Affordable and clean energy
  • No. 8 Decent work and economic growth
  • No. 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • No. 10 Reduced inequality
  • No. 11 Sustainable cities and communities
  • No. 12 Responsible consumption and production
  • No. 13 Climate action

For example, as demand on the power grid increases, we’re helping municipalities and utilities optimise power efficiency and distribution, including clean energy from solar and wind. With a projected global population increase of about 82 million people per year, food production – from field to table – will need to be more efficient, minimising waste while improving food safety. And working with many of the world’s largest manufacturers, we help make air and land transport operate more efficiently and safely, while consuming fewer resources.
