Medium-voltage switchgear modernization and upgrades

Eaton's medium-voltage vacuum replacement circuit breakers are built brand new from the ground up to improve system reliability and provide technology upgrades. Eaton's portfolio includes: vacuum replacement breakers, breaker to vacuum starter replacements and ground and test devices.  The units are designed to be electrical and mechanical equivalents of the power circuit breakers they replace, with no parts reused from the original breakers.

Medium-voltage vacuum replacement breakers

Solve parts availability problems, increase interrupting capability, reduce maintenance costs and downtime, and eliminate asbestos-filled arc chutes with VR Series+, VR Series, FAME and VHC+.

Medium-voltage breaker to vacuum starter replacements

Gain an efficient and cost-effective solution for electric utility generation and process industries that apply power circuit breakers as motor starters.

Medium-voltage ground and test devices

Apply temporary grounding to the phase conductors of switchgear during maintenance and testing in compliance with OSHA and NFPA 70E requirements.

VR-Series+ and VR-Series vacuum replacement circuit breakers

  • Resolve parts availability problems by utilizing common components
  • Reduce maintenance costs and downtime
  • Meets or exceeds IEEE/ANSI standards
  • 50% fewer parts reduces per breaker costs
  • Front accessible mechanism
  • Eaton's Sure-Close technology prevents circuit breaker from stalling during closing
  • Interrupting capabilities available in the same footprint, with bus bracing analysis
  • Eliminates asbestos arc-chutes with maintenance-free current transfer system and no contact maintenance

Vacuum replacement breakers for most manufacturers

VR-Series+ and VR-Series vacuum replacement circuit breakers are designed to be electrical and mechanical equivalents of several different generations of the air-magnetic circuit breakers they replace including Westinghouse, Allis-Chalmers, Federal Pacific, General Electric, ITE, McGraw-Edison and more.

VR-Series+ vacuum replacement breakers

VR-Series+ circuit breakers provide superior performance over the original circuit breaker, including 10-year or 10,000-operation scheduled maintenance intervals, utility hardened mechanism with enhanced durability and no contact maintenance.

VHC-Series+ vertical to horiztonal conversion

Reduce maintenance and increase safety for GE Magne-Blast® metal-clad switchgear with this reversible vertical-to-horizontal conversion that requires no cutting or drilling of the original vertical cell structure and does not violate the original metal-clad integrity.  Watch the video to see the process and click below to learn more on the VHC-Series+ conversion.

Factory Authorized Mechanism Enhancement (FAME)

Increase the life of Eaton’s medium-voltage VCP-W vacuum circuit breakers and MV-VR circuit breakers with the FAME upgrade, while also significantly reducing costs and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Medium-Voltage breaker to vacuum starter replacements

Eaton’s medium-voltage breaker to vacuum starter replacements offer an efficient and cost-effective solution for electric utility generation and process industries that apply power circuit breakers as motor starters. This combined power circuit breaker/vacuum contactor offers an optimal solution, with:

  • Draw-out capability
  • Ability to use the same cell interface components for levering and interlocking
  • Little to no cell modifications
  • Current limiting fuses as primary fault protection
  • Mechanically latched
  • Switching duty life of up to 250,000 operations
  • Compatibility and testing to IEEE/ANSI C37.59-2018

Medium-voltage ground and test devices

Eaton’s medium-voltage ground and test devices are used to apply temporary grounding to the phase conductors of switchgear during maintenance and testing of the equipment. With a draw out safety device that can be inserted into a circuit breaker cubicle in the same manner as the VR-Series, the ground and test devices are available as a single or dual terminal.

  • Designed for insertion into the circuit breaker compartment to gain access to the primary stationary contacts or ground the circuit for maintenance work
  • Meets IEEE Std C27.20.6TM 2015
  • Ability to apply potential for cable testing
  • Enables access to both bus and line circuits for “phasing out” tests
  • Meets OSHA and NFPA 70E requirements

Remote power racking system (RPR-2)

Eaton’s RPR-2, enables remote racking of circuit breakers from leading manufacturers that can be inserted or removed using the rotation of a shaft. Operators may remain 25 feet or more away from the switchgear door during the racking process, which is outside of the arc flash protection boundary.
