Each year in May, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) recognizes National Electrical Safety Month, an annual campaign to educate key audiences about steps to reduce the incidents of electrical-related fires, fatalities, injuries and property loss. The theme for this year’s campaign was “Understanding the Code that Keeps Us Safe,” focusing on the importance of education around the National Electrical Code (NEC) and its three-year cycle.
Enforcement of the NEC and an understanding of its intricacies are essential to ensuring safety for professionals and the customers they serve. But code education is only one component of a comprehensive approach to electrical safety. Our panel of experts highlighted the importance of furthering safety education as they help shape and write the NEC and other industry codes in their various board positions.
Throughout the discussion we discussed the state of electrical safety in 2018, the latest technologies, challenges with NEC adoption and education and the role of maintenance as it pertains to safety.
Ensuring electrical safety is a responsibility we all share and education around this vital topic continues to be a priority, which why ESFI continues to recognize National Electrical Safety Month each May. Through this panel and our other efforts, we hope to enhance electrical safety education and reduce the number of safety-related incidents.
