In a building emergency, getting people to safety is the first and ultimate priority—and emergency lighting plays a crucial role, highlighting evacuation routes to protected areas and building exits. As LED technology continues to advance, it’s brought about new, high-performance products and applications throughout the industry. So Eaton engineers began asking themselves, isn’t it time someone re-thought emergency lighting, too?
Emergency lighting has always been seen as a non-negotiable; it’s required by law, so products tend to be purchased based more on value and less on performance. In truth, emergency lighting performance tended to be just good enough, so nobody expected all that much from it.
Whether you’re looking at emergency lighting, battens or architectural lighting, LED design has historically been an exercise in shoe-horning, where LED strips are forced-fit into traditionally designed housings. Because safety is one of our top-most concerns, Eaton engineers knew it was time to take a radically different approach. They started with the most efficient LEDs available, and then designed the best possible emergency lighting optics to fully exploit the available light output. The result was Eaton’s Micropoint 2 LED luminaire.
It began with some basic math. By law, emergency lighting is designed “to guide, not to blind.” That means the luminaires must produce effective light at an angle no greater than 60º, because beyond that, glare can be disorienting. Also, most emergency lights are designed to work in lots of environments, with lots of varying ceiling heights. The resulting light quality is inconsistent, leaving “hot spots” and “dark spots” that can be disorienting in a crisis situation.
Eaton engineers knew that the majority of their clients needed emergency lighting for ceilings 2–3 meters in height. Working with a maximum 60º angle, they could specifically engineer the light’s optics to maximize the lumen output for a 1W white LED. Leveraging Eaton’s in-house photometric testing capabilities, they tweaked and tweaked designs until the Micropoint 2 was able to produce class-leading lighting results with near-perfect uniformity.
In order to ensure light-coverage requirements for emergency situations, typical luminaires usually need be installed so that the output from one luminaire overlaps the next. But with Micropoint 2, you get a virtually razor-straight rectangle or square of light that can be perfectly aligned to completely illuminate the path to safety. Where a typical emergency luminaire illuminates the required 3–7 meter spacing, Micropoint 2’s optimized optics gives you more than 19-meter spacing, depending on ceiling height. So fewer total fixtures are required.
By taking a clean-sheet approach, Eaton engineers could actually make Micropoint 2 aesthetically appealing too—and easy to install. Every component of Micropoint 2 was engineered to be as unobtrusive as possible for the thinnest possible profile. Eaton’s engineers also worked hard to make sure that everything—the LED gears, PCBs, batteries—would fit into a 65mm core drill bit, a convenient standard size for contractors. Working against incredible space and thermal constraints, Eaton created a first-fix plug and connector that makes Micropoint 2 easy to install and easy to maintain for battery replacement. All in a beautifully compact design that architects, owners and end-clients love.
Micropoint 2 makes monthly and annual testing easy, too. Manual, self-test and addressable test system options allow building owners and operators to connect Micropoint 2 to a head-end computer for automatic testing and reporting as part of the building’s total life safety system.
