Project Bluegrass began as a strategy to replace Eaton’s dated data centers with a next-generation solution that would support our IT needs for 15 years into the future. It became a unique opportunity to put our best thinking in efficiency and flexibility to the test.

From the inside out, Project Bluegrass epitomizes Eaton innovation. Its two state-of-the-art data centers were designed to achieve unrivaled efficiency, availability and sustainability. A sophisticated electrical infrastructure supports power densities of up to 180 watts per square foot, making the best use of energy, eliminating waste and reducing power bill costs.

Its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.5 or less surpasses the industry average. And Eaton is expected to save over $23 million in energy costs over the next two decades.

Powering the future, from the switchgear to the power strip.

Incoming power is managed through Eaton switchgear: generator paralleling switchgear can sense a utility outage and initiate generator startup in the case of incoming power issues. Eaton equipment also transforms the incoming power and efficiently distributes it to support the IT infrastructure and mechanical system power needs throughout the facility.

The integrated power and building management system provides centralized monitoring and administration capabilities thanks to our Foreseer Enterprise Monitoring software. With the intelligence of this holistic, real-time view, technicians can resolve power issues as quickly and effectively as they do network and storage problems. Foreseer also provides the ability to immediately analyze the reactions of field adjustments, leading to improvements that reduced each site’s peak demand by over 12 kW and earned rebates from the electrical utility companies for shedding energy-intensive loads when demand is typically highest.

At the heart of the backup power system is our award-winning Power Xpert 9395 uninterruptible power system (UPS). Its modular design is scalable and flexible enough to easily accommodate future global business growth. It also delivers a 99% efficiency rating within a 50% smaller footprint.

Our 400V ePDU boosts the UPS technology enabling a low voltage power distribution system to further increase efficiency and decrease distribution costs. A state-of-the-art heat containment system keeps the equipment cool and protected. Not to mention lowering air-handling power usage by up to 30%.
