Update of the ERP guideline (EG) 640/2009

Successfully increase energy efficiency in drive technology

Electric drives account for around 70% of total electricity consumption in industry. It is estimated that by 2020 electric motors in Europe will convert 1,470 TWh of electricity into mechanical energy. Alone through previous Regulation (EC) 640/2009, it is estimated that energy savings of 102 TWh will be achieved by 2030 per year.

The regulation will now be continued by the follow-up study Lot 30 "Ecodesign Requirements for Motors and Variable Speed Drives": this will lead to an additional, estimated electricity saving of 10 TWh per year. The new regulation comes into force in two stages: step one 1.7.2021 and step two 1.7.2023. What the new regulations mean for the industry in detail, and which design possibilities with energy-efficient motors, motor starters, soft starters and variable frequency drives users have to achieve their energy efficiency goals, is described in the white paper.
