We want to be a driving force to ensure more climate friendly solutions for Norwegian sports facilities. The energy storage system at Bislett stadium enables us to utilize the solar production better, and the control system will reduce our energy expenditure.

The world's fifth most important sports arena of the 20th century

The current Bislett Stadium opened in 2005 and is in the same place and same distinct architectural style as the old stadium, which was demolished in 2004. In addition to athletics, the stadium is used for football, concerts and other events. The stadium is one of Norway's best-known sports arenas and the host of the annual ExxonMobil Bislett Games international athletics event. More than 50 athletics world records and 18 speedskating world records have been set at Bislett, which was named by Sports Illustrated as the world's fifth most important sports arena of the 20th century.

Ensuring back-up power supply and peak shaving while using more self-generated solar energy

The stadium wanted to invest in an energy storage solution that would enable them to shave peaks in energy consumption and usage, utilize the solar production in a smarter way and ensure there is a back-up power supply for the stadium and the events they host. In a worst-case scenario, and during peak periods, an outage in power supply during a fixture, event or concert, for example, would not only prove disastrous for the Bislett stadium, but also for the areas and people surrounding the sports facility who rely on the grid’s power supply.

Eaton xStorage Buildings system with a 100-kW power conversion system and three racks with 30 Eaton battery packs

The sports stadium now benefits from the installation of an Eaton xStorage Buildings system that includes a 100-kW power conversion system and three racks with 30 Eaton battery packs made up of second-life Nissan LEAF battery modules. This is a great example of circular economy. The 1100 m2 of solar production at Bislett Stadium was implemented in the summer of 2018 and has a potential of producing 150 000 kWh each year. The energy storage system currently installed can store up to 109 kWh but it can be easily upscaled to match increasing needs in the future.

Demonstrating environmental responsibility

The xStorage Buildings system works to reduce energy consumption from the grid during peaks by using the back-up renewable solar energy stored in Eaton’s xStorage Buildings battery packs. This way of managing stored energy and distributing it responsibly supports the grid’s power supply, making it robust and ensuring stability. The installation in the Bislett stadium demonstrates environmental responsibility, and it is expected that more energy storage systems will be installed in Norway in the future.
