Energy storage systems

xStorage Buildings

xStorage Buildings is an energy storage system that has multiple capabilities, including:

- Providing uninterrupted, high quality power

- Integrating renewable energy into the energy supply

- Integrating electric vehicle charging stations

- Storing energy and using it at peak time for peak shaving

- Supplying power off-grid

- Participating in demand-response programmes

- Selling energy back to the grid

Discover how it works

See how xStorage Buildings makes the Johan Cruijff ArenA more energy-efficient.

Enabling the integration of renewables and electric vehicle charging stations

xStorage Buildings enables the Catholic University of Lille in France to integrate its renewable energy production and maximise consumption on campus. The xStorage Buildings system also stores unused energy which is then redistributed during peak periods or when re-charging an electric vehicle. The system is used to power three electric vehicle charging stations. It provides six charging points with 132 kW of consumption at full load, which offers a high degree of modularity and flexibility vis-à-vis the electrical grid.

Ensuring back-up power and peak shaving while using more self-generated solar energy

The Bislett Stadium in Norway wanted to invest in an energy storage solution that would enable it to shave peaks in energy consumption and usage, utilise its production of solar power more intelligently and ensure back-up power for the stadium and the events it hosts. The xStorage Buildings system installed at the Bislett Stadium includes a 100 kW power conversion system and three racks with 30 Eaton battery packs made up of second-life Nissan LEAF battery modules. This is a great example of the circular economy.

Build resiliency

The xStorage Buildings system can improve resiliency and maintain power quality. This is an important criteria for commercial and industrial buildings which cannot risk power outages. As the energy requirements of these facilities continue to expand and local networks are connected to more distributed energy generation and clusters of EV charging, the ability of an energy storage system to provide resiliency is especially valuable.

Optimise energy

How to use electricity more efficiently is an increasingly important issue for many types of commercial and industrial buildings and facilities, but especially for those with peaks in demand, which may incur even higher costs. Peak demand charges can be avoided by investing in an xStorage Buildings energy storage system for peak shaving.

Go green

Installing xStorage Buildings enhances overall sustainability and reduces CO2 footprints, thereby limiting the deployment of diesel generators. The system also enables the increased consumption of renewable energy if connected to on-site wind and solar PV installations. The microgrid at the Wadeville facility in South Africa includes an xStorage Buildings system that saved 11,812 metric tons CO2 in one year.

Lower total cost of ownership

Commercial and industrial building owners and operators need to consider future energy requirements as well as potential opportunities for revenue generation. The xStorage Buildings system enables them to participate in demand-response programmes and frequency regulation. The system is modular and scalable to meet future demand and energy needs, taking advantage of lower cost lithium-ion batteries.

Rely on the right partner

Eaton is a power management leader with 100 years of experience in supplying and installing power distribution, uninterruptible power supply and back-up equipment. This high level of capability and knowledge is crucial for understanding how energy storage systems integrate into and operate within the existing power distribution infrastructure, and how the system will provide energy resiliency to protect the bottom line. We ensure the system meets the highest electrical safety regulations and standards at European and national levels. With our servicing and maintenance agreements, we provide peace of mind, from the design, installation and and commissioning of the system all they way through its operation.

Specifications

xStorage Buildings can be used for multiple applications.

Ensure back-up power and avoid costly downtime
xStorage Buildings can provide you with energy if the grid fails, thereby ensuring that critical systems keep running and allowing you to avoid costly downtime.
Peak shaving

xStorage Buildings stores energy from the grid during off-peak times or when renewable energy is available and releases it during peak times so that you don’t exceed your maximum demand, thereby allowing you to reduce cost through self-consumption.

Increase renewable self-consumption

xStorage Buildings stores renewable energy when the sun is shining or wind turbines are in action, in order to use it morning, noon and night.

Load shifting

xStorage Buildings can help you manage your electricity, ensuring that energy will be released to provide for higher loads when demand increases. It can also be pre-programmed to manage loads during normal times when load changes are inevitable, and at times when grid electricity prices are highest.

Take part in frequency regulation

xStorage Buildings can store energy and release it to the grid for frequency regulation and to contribute to the stability of the grid.

Participate in demand-response programmes
xStorage Buildings can store and release energy when required, thereby enabling you to take part in demand-response programmes.
