How to avoid downtime in industrial process and control applications

Signaling devices that won’t let you down.

Within an industrial environment, product lines and process control warnings are often managed with stack lights. These show the status of production and alert the operator to any changes, so that action can be taken to ensure the smooth running of the process.

The problem is, they are easily damaged and are not always scalable to larger production facilities or industrial processes such as the movement of large machinery parts across a factory with an overhead crane or a moving gantry.

There are many instances when sounder beacons are a better, more robust and less expensive option than complex light arrays.  They provide a clear and simple signal that there is an issue with a machine or a warning signal to help reduce unplanned downtime and protect both people and equipment.

Avoiding downtime

Ever had difficulty tracing a mysterious circuit breaker trip?  It could be the beacon warning system causing the problem.  This is due to the high inrush current some systems pull from the supply, fooling the system into a trip as it tries to protect your more vital equipment.

The X10 has been designed with technology developed by Eaton used and used fire system devices, where low inrush current on start-up is a key consideration.

For industrial process and control, it helps to avoid the tripping of circuit breakers that can be associated with older Xenon based sounder beacons. Nuisance tripping stops essential communications, but if the sounder beacon is on the same circuit as the process equipment, it can also lead to unwanted and expensive downtime.

The X10 datasheet quotes the inrush current not just the operating current.  If you are specifying for industrial control, inrush needs to be a key consideration in your selection criteria.

Applications where a low inrush current is important to include:

  • Low voltage lines with a long line length that is susceptible to voltage losses
  • Products that have a battery back-up or UPS (uninterruptable power supply)
  • Renewable energy sites such as solar, wind or tidal
  • PLC controls via managed power supplies and control lines to a high number of products

Brittle plastics damage easily

Sunlight can damage your Industrial sounder by making the plastic brittle causing the housing to fail. If it’s located in a remote or difficult to reach area then it can be expensive and time-consuming to replace.

Manufactured from ASA polycarbonate, the X10 has a tough exterior housing that is resistant to UV fade and will perform up to an operating temperature of 70°C right down to -40°C.

Perhaps it is time to start thinking about specifying a sounder beacon that can withstand the extremes of our climate?

A durable and robust solution with a 10 year warranty

The X10 range from Eaton provides a signaling solution that delivers IP69k ingress protection and IK08 impact resistance.

With an unrivalled level of flexibility, X10 allows you to replace your existing sounder beacons gradually, in line with your budget, and introduce improved features such as a move to LED.  A 10-year guarantee gives you the confidence that a new system or upgrade using X10 will provide a safety solution for years to come.
