The human machine interface of tomorrow

Machine operation interfaces designed with the user in mind

Machine operation is one of the many things being affected by digitalization in industry. Find out how to build operator focused human machine interfaces, leveraging the latest trends and technologies, to meet the expectations of the next generation of machine operators.

How machine builders see the future of human machine interfaces

More flexibility, mobile access and less time for training. These are three of the critical areas designers are focused on in the next generation of their machines.

What it takes to design a new human machine interface

When single machine functions that have historically been executed by the operator step by step are combined into an automated workflow, the human machine interface has to adapt. Machine operation interfaces need to become more flexible and adaptive to workflows that may be modified over time.
Role concept machine operation
Recent years have seen an increase in the complexity of machine operation interfaces, leading to extensive training requirements and constraints in flexibility for operation management. The availability of even more information thanks to digitalization in smart factories can make it more complicated. In a joint initiative with Eaton, the Machine Building Institute of the University RWTH Aachen has issued a whitepaper that describes how role concepts and adaptive human machine interfaces can help to improve the productivity of staff and optimize production performance via data available through increased data harvesting.

The results of the 2016 survey of the VDMA (German machine-building association) show a growing trend towards touchscreens and mobile devices. New operating and visualization concepts  need to be ready to process the additional information provided as part of Industry 4.0/IOT.

This whitepaper describes how human machine interfaces can be designed for the needs of digital natives, the upcoming generation of users. Ways to implement mobile devices, while ensuring that machines continue to be compliant to current regulations and regional market practices, are also discussed.

Agriculture 4.0 in fertigation systems

Eaton supports Gefion in automating and digitizing irrigation and fertigation management systems in order to optimize agricultural production in terms of yield and quality. In addition, Eaton's solution makes water distribution more efficient than in traditional fertilization with the aim to improve crop sustainability and enable the entire system to be checked quickly and efficiently.

How our customers build human machine interfaces for new machines

Intuitive operation for deep-hole drilling machines: Eaton solution partner mrm² has developed the perfect control concept based on Eaton’s powerful XV300 multi-touch panel and SmartWire-DT communication system.

A new machine to win the fight against Corona crisis

Beckmann Automation GmbH wanted to set-up a high-performance system to enable production of medical face masks with an output of up to 100 pieces per minute. With the support of eaton they were able to quickly and easily adapt its Eaton devices used in its standard machinery to create the desire set-up. Thanks to the modular design, application-oriented functions and easy handling of the XSOFT-CODESYS programming software, Beckmann Automation’s first prototype was up and running within just six weeks and able to produce 20,000 masks within one working shift.

Developing a drive-in concrete mixing plant

Getec Servicegesellschaft, normally a manufacturer of large concrete mixing plants, had long harbored the idea of a small, modular and expandable “concrete filling station” for self-pick-up. Thanks to Eaton's comprehensive range of automation products and services, the company was able to turn this idea into reality.
