Distributed I/O

Eaton’s substation-grade SMP distributed I/O platforms of the SMP IO-2000 series are specially designed to meet the requirements for distributed I/O in modern utility substation automation systems. This family of products is Linux-based and includes the evolutive SMP IO-2230 platform which supports binary inputs, binary outputs and analog inputs and the SMP IO-2330 system, with four models pre-mapped to specific I/O configurations. All models communicate over serial RS-485 or TCP/IP using fiber or copper Ethernet and can be integrated with the SMP Substation automation platform or used as standalone I/O modules that connect directly to a master station.

Leading cybersecurity

Eaton's distributed I/O platforms of the SMP IO-2000 series are the first utility substation automation technology certified under UL 2900-1.

Typical applications

When using a standalone distributed I/O unit, a master station can monitor and control remote devices using the DNP3 or IEC 61850 protocol, with accurate IRIG-B time-stamping, effectively replacing a traditional RTU. It is designed to provide seamless integration with the SMP Substation automation platform. It transparently adds support for discrete and analog I/O to the automation platform. Eaton's SMP Substation automation platform extends the distributed I/O platforms through its extensive protocol support, advanced logic processing, built-in HMI, field-proven tools and security features.

Supporting IEDs in distributed systems

The architecture of automation systems has moved from a centralized approach, based on large RTUs, to distributed systems based on Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) with built-in I/O capability. However, not all I/O can be managed by the IEDs and numerous functions require an I/O processor. Eaton’s SMP distributed I/O platforms are specially designed to fill this gap.

Eaton's utility solutions

As the world pushes for decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization of power, it brings new complexities to the utility industry. Adapting to the evolving power landscape means upgrading and modernizing your solutions so you can advance the energy transition towards a more sustainable, electrified world. With more than 100 years of electrical engineering experience, innovative digital solutions and expertise across generation, transmission and distribution, Eaton can help you get there.

Substation-grade

The distributed I/O platforms of the SMP IO-2000 series are robust substation-grade hardware devices specially designed to meet modern industry and utility requirements.

Designed for growth and flexibility

The SMP IO-2230 platform is Linux-based and can contain up to 64 I/Os arranged in flexible block configurations (not field-upgradable)

The SMP IO-2330 system platform is Linux-based, compact and ideal for limited space and no rear end reachability. It includes four (4) models, each with pre-mapped I/O configurations (not field-upgradable)

Seamless networking

Both platforms include Ethernet and RS-485 ports; they use the industry-standard DNP3, IEC 61850 and IEC 61850 GOOSE protocols.

Reduced engineering effort

The SMP distributed I/O platforms save on cabling, commissioning and configuration time, especially when it is used with the SMP Substation automation platform. Their removable connectors speed up hardware changes. The SMP IO-2000 series platforms can have their configuration file embeeded into the SMP Substation automation platform; a single configuration file to manage for all SMP devices.

Scalability

The SMP IO-2230 platform has an universal power supply with a wide input AC and DC voltage range as well as software configurable voltage ranges on binary inputs.

Cybersecurity

The SMP IO-2000 series platforms provide secure remote management capabilities; they have an integrated firewall and can be securely accessed for maintenance from Enterprise Management Software (IMS). All SMP distributed IO platforms are accessible for secure remote maintenance via the SMP Substation automation platform.

Accurate data

The SMP IO-2000 series platform’s error-detection features ensure data integrity between the data point and the control center. They also support IRIG-B synchronization for precise timestamping.

Remote managment ready

Use Eaton’s IED Management Suite (IMS) for remote management of the SMP IO-2000 series platforms, for example password management, configuration management.

Application video

SMP IO-2000 series QuickStart

This short video presents the different models of the SMP IO-2000 series and shows how to connect to the SMP IO-2000 series device for the first time. It explains how to update the firmware version and how to configure the network settings to access the device remotely, via an IP network. It also explains how to export a DNP3 XML configuration for a DNP master station or an SMP Substation automation platform and how to create an IEC 61850 server protocol instance in the device configuration file.
