RTU upgrade solution

Eaton’s innovative, flexible and high performing RTU upgrade solution reduces the costs and complexity of replacing a legacy system. Eaton’s solution involves its cybersecure substation-grade SMP automation platform and SMP IO-2330 system units, matching the required I/O configurations. The SMP IO-2330 system presents the same form factor as the legacy GE D20 I/O modules and offers pre-mapped I/O configurations to match the most popular legacy RTU models to upgrade. This SMP IO-2330 system is perfect for upgrades with limited space and no rear end reachability. Open frame options are also available, allowing to keep the legacy GE D20 termination panel in place with all existing wiring and simply replace the Logic panel.

Preserve existing cabling
Reduced cost, complexity and commissioning time
NERC CIP compliance
Smarter, more secure grid

Providing security and support for modern protocols

Use an SMP SG-4260 automation platform and the SMP IO-2330 system to cost-effectively replace legacy GE D20 RTUs, adding security, automation capabilities and support for modern protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 61850 GOOSE or DNP3.

Upgrade your legacy RTU with minimal service interruption

Eaton's RTU upgrade solution preserves wiring of the legacy I/O cabling. This feature enables the system to be replaced with minimal impact to engineering and operations while delivering best-in-class security, communications and data management. The SMP IO-2330 system offers the complete legacy RTU upgrade as well as open frame options, keeping the legacy GE terminations panel in place and replacing only the logic panel, reducing even more upgrade impacts. This solution enables utilities to implement smarter and more secure substations with advanced technology and minimized service interruptions.

Specifications

10-year warranty on the SMP IO-2330 system

All Eaton SMP products are designed to operate without any maintenance for their entire lifetime when used under normal conditions. All SMP IO-2330 system units now come with a 10-year limited warranty, the terms of which are described in the 10-year warranty on SMP products document.

Benefits

Cybersecurity

  • Helps meet NERC CIP requirements
  • Secures IED remote access and enhances SCADA communication links

Hardware

  • No required rewiring in the field
  • Significantly reduces replacement costs, manpower hours and substation downtime
  • SMP IO-2330 system is rack- and wall-mountable and fits into confined spaces (similar form factor as GE D20 RTU)
  • Adapts to various configurations using the existing RTU allocated space
  • Uses substation-grade SMP devices
  • Easy expansion made possible by adding other SMP IO-2330 systems, standalone SMP IO-2230 units or other IEDs

Software

  • The SMP IO-2330 system uses open industry protocols: standard DNP3, GOOSE messaging and IEC 61850 over a TCP/IP or RS-485 link
  • The SMP IO-2330 system is Linux-based
  • The SMP SG-4260 automation platform supports more than 80 protocols in order to integrate other IEDs
  • The SMP SG-4260 automation platform and the SMP IO-2330 system use SMP Manager as their management application, which includes SMP Config configuration tool, SMP Trace, SMP Stats and SMP Log. These SMP devices also use the HMI Commissioning Tool. Using these tools drastically simplifies I/O configuration and integration into the system.
  • Embedded configuration of the SMP IO-2330 system units into the SMP automation platform configuration is supported; a single file to manage for all SMP devices
  • Enhanced automation capabilities available with the automation functions and SoftPLC for the SMP automation platform and micro PLC capabilities for the SMP IO-2330 system

Remote management ready

  • Use Eaton’s IED Management Suite (IMS) for remote management, for example password management, configuration management

The available models

Eaton’s solution to replace legacy RTUs enables utilities to implement smarter and more secure substations with advanced technology and minimized service interruptions.

It combines the SMP SG-4260 automation platform and SMP IO-2330 system units which are pre-configured to specific I/O mappings to match the configuration and form factor of the legacy GE D20 I/O models A, S, C1, K and KR. All connectors are located at the front of the unit. The SMP IO-2330 system is Linux-based.

The SMP IO-2330 system is available as standard product for several I/O configuration models. All models share the same software capabilities, providing reduced learning time and a simplified migration path between solutions and models.

Other SMP IO-2330 system models can be made available within a few weeks.
