Inspired by our goal to become carbon neutral by 2030 and our ambition to leave a greener world for future generations, our team in Bușag, Romania, has slashed their site’s environmental footprint by investing in renewable power generation.
Opened in 2012, our Bușag site manufactures high-quality electrical components and enclosures for the Europe, Middle East and Africa market—including switchboard, switchgear, and motor control systems. The site also meets rigorous performance targets for safety, quality, on-time delivery, inventory, and productivity; it has been recognized as an Eaton World Class Manufacturer and Model Plant—our highest manufacturing honor.
In 2018, our Bușag team began a four-year journey towards a transformative investment in solar generation that would greatly lower the facility’s carbon footprint. We were proud to help fund this pioneering project through our Eaton GreenUp Awards, set up to support our most impactful sustainability initiatives.
Excited by the potential of new technologies to conserve resources and benefit the environment, our Bușag team began exploring different approaches to integrating solar power in 2018.
After researching technologies, financial viability, and the best partners for the journey, the team selected Enel X Romania to oversee the turnkey installation of a rooftop photovoltaic system integrating more than 1,600 high-efficiency solar panels.
To ensure the safety of maintenance staff, the team decided to allow plenty of walking space in the rooftop layout, to use highly fire-resistant solar panels, and to adopt custom-built Enel X inverters with rapid shutdown capabilities and voltages below 20 VDC, as well as further Eaton components—including electrical cabinets and circuit breakers.
By July 2021, the installation of the rooftop photovoltaic system had begun and the whole process was completed just three months later.
The site’s photovoltaic system now provides around 773 MWh per year. This has reduced the plant’s annual carbon emissions by approximately 240 metric tons, while also lowering energy costs and protecting against price volatility.
As the first photovoltaic system in Romania to comply with FM Global’s standards for safety and property loss prevention, this project also charts a path for other innovative companies to follow.
Our team’s efforts in Bușag are a testament to our firm commitment to the environment and the active role we encourage all divisions, sites, and employees to play in driving sustainability.
At Eaton, employee initiatives play a crucial role in helping us reach our ambitious 2030 sustainability targets. To recognize and support projects that enable environmental operational excellence, we launched the Eaton GreenUp Awards.
Our award categories span clean energy, transport, and building efficiency, as well as minimizing waste, water discharge reduction, and more. Our sites or divisions can enter investment proposals that will tangibly reduce our environmental footprint—and our winners receive the funding to turn their green ideas into reality.
