Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems for medical applications

We offer various UPS systems for medical use, with functions that meet the particular needs of these often demanding applications. See below for a selection of UPS systems that we recommend for use in medical environments.

Which type of UPS should you use and why?

Servers are a crucial piece of IT equipment that should be protected against both outages and power quality issues, such as sags and surges. For this purpose, we recommend the Eaton 5P or Eaton 5PX Gen 2 (the ‘X’ stands for extended batteries), whose wide range of power ratings, clear notifications, advanced LCD and optional connectivity make them ideal for protecting professional equipment.

Medical imaging technology such as X-ray machines or MRI scanners have their own particular requirements when it comes to back-up power. As these types of loads are subject to strong pulses and spikes, a high-performance UPS is recommended, such as the Eaton 93PS, 93E, 93PM or 93PM G2 or the Power Xpert 9395P, ideally with the addition of supercapacitors.

While security systems are frequently battery-powered, you can connect them to a UPS for an additional layer of protection. With their extended battery runtime, either the Eaton 5PX Gen 2 or the more powerful Eaton 9PX are the ideal choice for backing up connected equipment, such as power over Ethernet (PoE) switches or systems used for storing security camera footage.

Critical installations in facilities, such as operating theatres or recovery rooms, require a reliable online UPS to ensure that power is always available, usually with interruptions not exceeding 0.5 seconds. For this reason, the ideal choice for this type of application is a powerful uninterruptible power supply for medical equipment of the latest generation, for example the Eaton 93PM G2, 93E G2 or the Power Xpert 9395P.

Hospitals are a clear use case for the importance of UPS technology. For the protection of standard medical equipment, we thus recommend the  SmartPro medical-grade UPS with hospital-grade (HG) outlets. Compliant with UL 60601, it provides a basic level of battery back-up for use in medical facilities.

Lifts are perhaps one of the most obvious use cases for a UPS, irrespective of their location. In the event of a power cut, the connected UPS system will prevent people from getting stuck (or worse). Since the associated loads may be quite large, we recommend a more powerful UPS, such as the Eaton 9SX or 9PX with advanced protection for this purpose.

We have developed the Eaton Ellipse PRO specifically for protecting computer equipment – it offers the right level of protection for workstations and the associated accessories, and comes with standard sockets rather than IEC connectors. A line-interactive UPS, meaning that voltage fluctuations are automatically corrected, it features an LCD for real-time status updates.
