More than half (51%) of utilities surveyed are executing a digital strategy, while another 44% are considering digitalizing business processes and assets. However, the industry struggles with large amounts of legacy technology at the core of its operations and lags in the adoption of new digital tools and technologies, with just under one in five (18%) respondents expressing "broad adoption." Other factors, such as company size, geographic location and local market regulations, also affect the pace of change for individual utility operators, limiting a one-size-fits-all approach to digital transformation in the sector.
Those are among the major takeaways from a survey commissioned by Eaton and conducted by S&P Global Market Intelligence of 250 employees from small, medium-sized and large utility companies, all of whom are involved in their organization’s digital transformation efforts.
