  • Decarbonization collaboration: helping data centers harness renewables

    We’re turning data centers green and accelerating the global energy transition as part of the DATAZERO2 research consortium—enabling reliable, zero-emission facilities powered only by renewables.

As the information age accelerates, data centers could consume a fifth of global electricity by 2025 and create 14% of carbon emissions by 2040. Helping these facilities meet 100% of their primary power requirements from renewables is crucial to global decarbonization efforts.

To overcome the huge challenge of powering reliable and resilient data centers with highly intermittent renewable energy sources, Eaton has joined forces with some of the world’s leading experts. We firmly believe in the power of a collaborative approach to accelerate the energy transition—sharing our experience with governments, industry bodies, academia, and more.

One such collaboration is the DATAZERO2 project. Planned to run from 2020 to 2023, this new R&D initiative will build on the achievements of the original DATAZERO consortium. Short for “Data centers with zero emissions and robust management using renewable energy”, the initial DATAZERO collaboration saw great success in helping data centers to harness multiple renewables effectively and to store power locally through energy storage solutions and green hydrogen.

Completed in 2019, DATAZERO was funded by the French National Research Agency. Led by the Toulouse Institute of Computer Science Research (IRIT), the project consortium also included the LAPLACE laboratory and FEMTO-ST Institute, as well as Eaton.

Together, we designed microgrids that combine renewable production with hybrid energy storage. We also integrated a middleware ‘negotiation loop’ that matches energy production and storage with data center requirements. In June 2019, we confirmed it’s theoretically possible to run a 1MW data center with only local renewable power, as well as long and short-term energy storage.

Collaborating with the same partners, we’re now thrilled to bring Eaton’s expertise in both electrical and virtualized IT architectures, as well as server power consumption models, to DATAZERO2. The goal of DATAZERO2 is to streamline operations for data centers relying only on renewables. In particular, the team will focus on more robust task scheduling and improved uncertainty management, cooling, and power distribution. A second objective is to create a comprehensive knowledge base and higher technology readiness level that will enable more widespread adoption of this technology in data centers worldwide.

There are strong economic arguments to embrace DATAZERO2’s research efforts. According to Beyond the Tipping Point—a study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance—by the mid-2020s, energy from new wind and solar installations will be cheaper than that from the average natural gas plant in Europe. Additionally, systemic grid energy loss is a compelling reason to position green energy production as close as possible to sites of intense power consumption, like data centers.

However, our work won’t just allow data centers to drive cost savings and lower their carbon footprint. DATAZERO2 will also empower data centers to become green energy hubs that help intelligently balance supply and demand across the grid through the bi-directional flow of power. With the right combination of onsite hardware and energy management software, data centers can intelligently respond to the needs of the grid: ramping power consumption up or down to optimize the use of renewable energy and to help prevent outages.

Jérôme Lecuivre

Jérôme Lecuivre leads Eaton’s Power Quality Software Design Team. He oversees the development of Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager solution, connecting power devices, such as uninterruptible power supplies and power distribution units, with IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, virtualized platforms and the cloud. Jérôme is also Eaton’s scientific coordinator for the DATAZERO2 research project. He has a master’s degree in engineering from ENSEM and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Nancy, France.
