The use of renewable energy is becoming the new normal in the data centre industry. However, the integration of variable renewable energy resources into a more dynamic electric grid comes with new challenges and technical requirements. Fortunately, data centres are in a unique position to increase the reliability of the grid by allowing access to a part of their backup power systems.

Advancements in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and batteries, such as Eaton’s EnergyAware UPS, enable interaction with the smart electric grid, thereby contributing to the pursuit of more efficient and sustainable data centres.

A recent whitepaper, UPS interacting with the Electric Grid can do more for data centres, commissioned by Eaton and published by market-leading data, research, and consulting business Omdia reveals that the data centre market is ready for the adoption of grid-interactive UPSs.

A survey of 380 qualified IT decision makers across five regions found that:

expect to deploy grid-interactive UPS within the next four years – more than half expect to do so within two years

are confident that smart grid-ready UPS will not put mission-critical loads at risk

Energy demand management and sustainability are major adoption drivers for grid- interactive UPSs

The biggest market opportunities are in Europe, followed by North America and others
