Distributed I/O

Eaton’s substation-grade SMP distributed I/O platforms of the SMP IO-2000 series are specially designed to meet the requirements for distributed I/O in modern utility substation automation systems. This family of products is Linux-based and includes the evolutive SMP IO-2230 platform which supports binary inputs, binary outputs and analog inputs and the SMP IO-2330 system, with four models pre-mapped to specific I/O configurations. All models communicate over serial RS-485 or TCP/IP using fiber or copper Ethernet and can be integrated with the SMP Substation automation platform or used as standalone I/O modules that connect directly to a master station.

Viktiga egenskaper

  • Seamless networking facilitated through the SMP distributed I/O’s Ethernet and RS-485 ports, and by relying on the industry-standard DNP3 protocol
  • Support of IEC 61850 and IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging
  • Integrated micro PLC and full integration with the SMP Substation automation platform management application
  • Comply with industry cybersecurity standards (certified under UL 2900-1 for firmware version 2.0)
  • The SMP IO-2230 platform is Linux-based and designed for growth with up to 64 I/Os
  • The SMP IO-2330 system is Linux-based, compact, rack- and wall-mountable and offers four models with predefined I/O mappings

Typical applications

When using a standalone SMP I/O, a master station can monitor and control remote devices using the DNP3 protocol, with accurate IRIG-B time-stamping, effectively replacing a traditional RTU. It is designed to provide seamless integration with the SMP Gateway. It transparently adds support for discrete and analog I/O to the automation platform. Eaton's SMP Gateway extends the SMP I/O through is extensive protocol support, logic processing, built-in HMI and security features

Supporting IEDs in distributed systems

The architecture of automation systems has moved from a centralized approach, based on large RTUs, to distributed systems based on Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) with built-in I/O capability. However, not all I/O can be managed by the IEDs and numerous functions require an I/O processor. Eaton’s SMP I/O is specially designed to fill this gap.

Benefits

SUBSTATION-GRADE

The SMP I/O is a robust substation-grade hardware platform that meets IEEE 1613 and IEC 61850-3 standards for vibration, electrical surges, fast transients and extreme temperature ranges.

DESIGNED FOR GROWTH

The SMP I/O input and output cards can be added in minutes, without removing the unit from the rack.

SEAMLESS NETWORKING

The SMP I/O includes 1 Ethernet and 1 RS-485 port. It uses the industry-standard DNP3 protocol.

REDUCED ENGINEERING EFFORT

The SMP I/O saves on cabling, commissioning and configuration time, especially when it is used with the SMP Gateway. Its removable connectors speed up hardware changes.

ACCURATE DATA

The SMP I/O’s error-detection features ensure data integrity between the data point and the control center. It supports IRIG-B synchronization for precise timestamping.

SMP I/O

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

The SMP I/O is composed of a base unit that can accept up to four field-installable I/O cards. The base unit provides two programmable form-C output relays, RS-485 and Ethernet communications interfaces, and an IRIG-B interface.

All wiring is on the rear panel through removable terminal blocks. The front panel displays the status of the device and the state of all I/O signals. A Local/Remote control disables all control commands from the master station for operator safety during system maintenance.
